Huskers top running QBs of all time. Who ya got?

Four defenders in the backfield chasing him around, all the way back to our 6 yard line. And TMart takes it to the house. Show me a better QB scramble on a broken play. At any level[SIZE=11pt]—[/SIZE]FBS, FCS, NFL, high school, Pop Warner, you name it.

I cannot for the life of me fathom why he gets so little credit. Gdowski is on people's lists but Martinez is low on people's lists because he got injured his freshman season. How does that make sense? The Wisconsin and UCLA runs and probably many others I'm forgetting happened after he was injured.

You make a good point. I discounted him because of his injuries. When he was healthy, TM was a freak. I swear he was running a sub 4.0 forty. Often when heading into the endzone he was slowing down or loafing. I still say he wins two or three Heismans if he stays healthy.

Martinez was the fastest straight-ahead runner at QB that Nebraska has ever had. He had decent ball skills at running the zone read, but man, he was so freaking fast and was so fun to watch for a good amount of time at NU.

That doesn't mean he's a running quarterback. It means that, when he wanted to be associated with Tom Osborne & Nebraska football, he modified his game accordingly.

He's gotta be the only non-running quarterback in history to have a 1,000 yard rushing season, right?

I swear it seemed like Jamelle played for Switzer for at least nine years. Probably because we were on the receiving end of his talents.

Same with Buster Rhymes. Both of them started off with scholarships and left Oklahoma with pensions.

It's not funny or ridiculous to pick Martinez as one of the top QBs we've ever had. He wasn't surrounded by the talent and dominating lines that the QBs you listed had.

Or good qb coaches. Seeing the hay Langs is making with Tommy, I really feel for Martinez. And Tommy.

Think how good Tommy might be if he would've had a QB coach his entire career. Or if Taylor Martinez would've had one...

At least Tommy is finally getting to benefit from Langsdorf's tutelage and showing improvement.

Is this in order? Gerry Gdowski was a fine QB. If we're limiting it to *running* quarterbacks like the title says, he's not remotely close to Turner Gill. Gill is top five, no question.

Gdowski is more in the mold of David Humm and Zac Taylor. He was a Tom Osborne QB so he had to run, but that was not his forte, and he was not better at it than Gill, Steve Taylor or Tommy Armstrong.

Yeah, it's in order. Although in hindsight, I'd put Newcombe lower. I was thinking more on running ability on the field, rather than running as a QB. That being said, just take Newcombe off the list, and I'll stand by it.

Langsdorf's presence, and the work that is obviously being done in that qb room as we speak really makes me feel sympathetic towards Martinez, Armstrong, and even Stanton, Fyfe, Bush, etc etc etc. I know they chose to come here, so it is what it is, but to a degree, it really wasnt fair to those guys. Watch some Martinez highlights from 2010 prior injury. Not just running, but his passing. watch his whole game. He was already every bit of what Mariotta became. But the development flatlined after that. Lots like to blame the injury. There's plenty of evidence to suggest more systemic issues.

To be considered a good option QB, the abiltiy to run and stay healty is paramont! Martinez could run but fell victum to in the injury bug. Sorta what worries me about armstrong but i will say that tommy is very strong willed (tuff) you may have to drag him off the field and chain him to a good post to keep him from going back in. last years purdue game is very fresh in his mind. to me, that was the day, that tommy decided to become a QB.

All of them get hurt at one point or another. But not all of them had coaches smart enough to have a viable backup so they could heal.
