Mike Riley brought back the fullback trap, and continues to run it successfully with a player that had been lost in the previous system.

Nebraska still runs the ball more than it passes the ball.

Passing the ball sets up the run. If you don't understand this, you don't understand football.

Riley did not appear to inherit an RB of the Helu/Burkhead/Abdullah pedigree, but one could still emerge.

Last year, fans were desperately wishing Nebraska had Wisconsin's offensive identity.

This year, Joel Stave threw the ball 50 f'ing times against Nebraska.

The only thing better than Wisconsin's offense would have been Paul Johnson's at Georgia Tech, the last of the run-first powerhouses.

Georgia Tech is 2 - 4 this season, with considerably larger losing margins than Nebraska's.

There is not a coaching savior out there who believes in the run/pass ratio that you insist is a no-brainer.

So, as I'm reading correctly from this thread, OP essentially wants us to go back to 1995 because throwing the football is "wussy."

Give me a break. There are several things in OP that make the argument drivel, but one of the most egregious is the idea that outstanding coaches find ways to win regardless of their circumstances. Many of the "outstanding" or even very successful coaches in division one football right now had average teams at lower tier schools. Saban is one of them. You're pumping poison into other posters here by suggesting great coaches have been great forever and that's fundamentally false.

And those "sissy" offenses from the coasts have been working our defenses raw for years. Does that still make them sissy? Pretty sure most of those athletes would've destroyed you and most of this board in our prime so don't sit there and spout off about how they're somehow lesser football players because they don't meet some vision in your mind.

I actually agree that I think Nebraska should be more of a run-based program. And if you want to argue a different type of scheme is better for Nebraska that's fine, but you can do better than that.

And just from a pure selfish reason, I want a coach who knows and can teach/coach an overpowering running game (at least a 80/20 or higher run-pass ratio) because i like the BEAUTY of a running game attack I find more joy in a 5 yard fullback trap or an inside ISO play than I do any kind of pass play. Passing, to me, just represents WUSSY football pure and simple. You aren't dominating anyone with a passing attack. You aren't imposing your will with a passing game. You're playing monkey in the middle, throwing it over the defenders' head instead of RAMMING it down their throats with a running game.

There *was* talk not too long ago about going that route to help limit concussions and spearing by players on the field. Not sure where it went, though...probably nowhere, unless Nike and UA are on board with it...

The point is, you can't win Championships without being good in all phases of the game.

When Nebraska was winning championships they were still able to throw the ball well enough to get the defense to back off. If you are good and running and throwing, but your defense is trash....you don't win championships.

Look at Oregon.

If you are good at just running and nothing else you don't win championships

Look at Georgia Tech

If you are good at throwing the football but nothing else, you don't win championships

Look at Washington State

If you are only great on defense and nothing else, you don't win championships

Look at Nebraska 2009, Northwestern 2015, and probably Michigan 2015

When you are great and rushing, passing, and defense.....YOU HAVE A SHOT AT WINNING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Look at OSU 2015, Look at Bama under Saban, USC 2004, Texas 2005, Florida 2008, etc

Arkansas is another program to look at. Last year they were primarily a run team and went 7-6. Bielema must have decided that wasn't going to work and this year they are trying to get their passing going. Results aren't very good so far but that isn't the point.

2011 game in November at Jack Trice. Temperature 46 degrees, no wind.

Both teams were using "Pass happy" versions of spread offenses.

Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden was 42/58 for 476 yards, with 3TD and 3 INT

They were running an "air raid" offense under Todd Monken (current Southern Miss HC)

Iowa State's Jarred Barnett was 32/58 for 376 yards, with 3 TD and 2 INT

They were running a spread offense under Tom Herman (current Houston HC)

Iowa State had 60/41 pass/rush for 376/192 yards.

so.... I guess the cyclones ran all over them....

Maybe OK St. could've won without the 3 PICKS. Name an Air Raid squad that's won it all. Oklahoma in 2000, maybe, but as mentioned, they won with defense more than anything. Besides, do you honestly think we're going to get back throwing half the time? We've TRIED this before, and it led to 2 losing seasons. Why is this going to be any different?

I also never said ISU ran all over them. OSU, a passing squad, was upset by a mediocre ISU team in Jack Trice.

For all those thinking it is time to go back to the 1990s and run, run, run...look at Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets can't even get it going against the ACC, one of the worst conferences in college football.

I agree, I'd like to see more running, or at least consistency in our run game, but to go back to nothing but run, it just wouldn't work.

Ha, yeah if I was head coach you'd better believe I'd have those offensive linemen drive blocking on the sleds and against each other until the cows came home. And QBs would be running the ball, lowering their shoulders and taking hits and GIVING hits thru punishing a would be tackler AND blocking for the I-backs, etc. No Johnny Golden Arm QB is just standing around during practice thinking he's just gonna gunsling the ball around all day long and not be physical.
