Icing the kicker

Anyone else think that was a bad idea? I mean, I thought Ball State was calling the timeout to try and ice the fans.. but no, it was us! It seems a bad idea in that situation when crowd noise is a HUGE factor to call two timeouts.. i mean thankfully he missed the FG, but why would they do that? I've never actually witnessed "icing the kicker" working. I mean it did this time, but i don't think it was the timeouts I think it was crowd noise/nerves.

And maybe shouldn't he have saved a timeout in case they made the field goal? There was what like 27 seconds left. After the kickoff we could conceivably have had a play or two to setup a field goal attempt, and a timeout could have been huge.

Icing kickers is kinda funny b/c each kicker I played with said it was easier to kick after a time out. And if you look at the stats across the board it proves it also, it's just a silly thing coaches thinks works.

I knew he would miss either way, after dropping an easy TD we were destined to get a break

Exactly my point, we had momentum and the crowd involved and i honestly thought he was going to make that field goal because we gave them time to regroup. That missed FG was just one of many lucky breaks we had that allowed us to win the game... but part of that was just that we had momentum.

I heard that the worst thing was when they actually have to rush out on the field. The more time they have, the more they can go through all their routines.

IMO, it varies from kicker to kicker whether that will work or not. The idea is to make the guy think about it too much instead of just kicking the damn thing. I know that's probably something that would help my golf game. Just hit the damn ball and stop thinking about it!

Statistically the NFL claims that 3% more kicks are made after a time out. No stat on college.

Icing is a myth. But I have done it as a coach both in football and basketball b/c at this point youre just suppposed to.

It worked, so why the consternation?

And, there were only 17 seconds on the clock....

Err, I'm pretty sure it was 48 yards and 27 seconds left on the clock... There was 17 left when we got the ball back after the kickoff.... am I wrong?

EDIT: Nevermind i guess it was 55yards.. but their kicker was capable of making 60+ anyway.. but i'm still fairly sure it was 27 seconds left before they kicked the field goal.
