Further, most illegals can't actually get most of the benefits you mentioned. For example, most can't get Medicaid (free healthcare for the indigent) - there is now a "proof of citizenship" requirement to become Medicaid eligible. Prior to that, many states had their own specific requirements that denied Medicaid to those that could not prove citizenship.
You are extremely naive if you think that the papers they show are always real. I have friends who work in the restaurant industry and they deal with it all of the time. They come with fake documents and if they are found out, they come back in a couple of weeks with new fake ones. It is a vicious cycle.

And to say whoever wants to enter this country illegally is just insane. If people want to come to America for freedom and whatever else CubHusker says, they should have to take the proper steps to become one...not just step over the border and think they are legal citizens.

Whoa, I think I got the wrong thread, did I just step into a Young Republican meeting
Not only republicans think this.

You guys fail to realize all of your ancestors came here from OTHER COUNTRIES and I highly doubt they knew English when they landed.
I believe most of our ancestors actually became US citizens by taking the proper steps and chose to learn English. You didn't see the Native Americans being forced to learn German, Norwegian, Dutch, etc in order to get a job did you?? Some (NOT ALL) just refuse to learn the language. How said is it that school districts have to hire an interpreter to communicate with the parents b/c they don't want to learn the language? Tax money well spent!! :sarcasm

Actually, I am sure it was MUCH different at that time. Honestly there probably wasn't a dominant language as we see today. Sure, they eventually learned english from conversing with english speaking folk, but it's not like that was a priority when they stepped off the board.

Also, the native americans had to reason to learn any other language. Our ancestors just took their land anyway, let the guns do the talking. ooh burn!! :)

Seriously, this whole language thing is blown way out of proportion if you ask me. Is it really that big of a deal what language people speak? I mean, c'mon. In other parts of the world, you can't travel more than a couple hundred miles without having to speak more than one language. :woo

Why are Americans in general so against or seemingly afraid to know any other language? I mean, it seems that way since people demand OMG YOU MUST SPEAK PERFECT ENGLISH! Hell, I have met people who have lived here for years and sometimes their English isn't the best. But do I badger them? No, you communicate the best you can and that's it. You don't preach, which I doubt some people would actually do to someones face.

On immigration, AR says a lot. It's a tough situation. There is no denying that illegal immigrants do contribute to the country. However, I don't think amnesty is the answer. Essentially saying, "Hey, we have these rules that you need to follow to become a citizen, but nah, nevermind." Doesn't sound right.

There is no easy, cut and dry answer, but we do need to come up with a better way to secure our borders.

Travel is the key word in that sentence....oohh burn

Nah, I am just playin' with you. I agree that there has to be something done to better patrol out borders. This is a topic that will most likely never be figured out. As rawhide stated, we have to agree to disagree.

For the record I hire no one at my current location.

When I did hire I hired people that spoke English first any other language they knew I could care less. That way I could train them properly and there were no misunderstandings. Right now my 'boss' is an idiot that has us outnumbered and therefore learning English is probably not all that appealing. That being said Spanish is not in my future either. BTW you can communicate with a Spanish/English Dictionary that is how I came to the conclusion that they were here temporarily and that they did not care to learn English.

People will work for a low wage that are not Hispanic, ie Me and everyone I have ever hired. :horns2 Thats right more than just hispanics work in the food service industry in fact most arent hispanic.

English is important because I can only use the non-speaking folks for a cook/prep/cleaning role when they have far more potential than that.

I didnt mean for this to become some illegal immigration thing or a reading level nerd fest but to each their own. This was just meant to be a rant after a couple bad days at work with non-speaking English people.

Again, for the record I dont hate Mexicans I dont dislike immigrants. I just cannot stand people that fail to take advantage of this great countries resources and learn English after 5+ years of being here.

Immigrants come over here legally and the process takes forever from what I am told but they are taught English and the history of America which is extremly important. It is important for us to stem the illegal immigration and deal with the illegals we have here.

How we will deal with it who knows? However, a solution must be reached or the problem will only grow. Reagan did not deal with it and Bush wont either but someone must step up. My only solution to the problem is to somehow help Mexico's economy. Maybe less would come here and more of the illegals would go home if jobs existed there.

I am against those that use and abuse the system who are not Americans (meaning legal citizens) and expect to have citizens rights and expect to be pandered. This sends a red flag up for me. We in America listen to the minority opinion whether we like it or not. However, why are we listening to illegal aliens on an American issue pertaining to American laws not Mexican.

This argument will never be settled or agreed upon by all.

Learning English is key to sucess in America and I wish all the success in the world to a 'true' immigrant!

CubHusker whatever that is, implying that I am a Klan member because I believe English should be spoken in the business world of the USA is absurd!
