Impact on Recruiting

Folks:

All it would take is 5 minutes on this board for a potential recruit to see the attitude of the Husker fans who post here and, if they assume that what is written here reflects Nebraska fans as a whole --- it would expected that almost to the number the potential recruit would say "thanks, but no thanks --- I want no part of a fan base like that, with fans that eat their own and who are cruel and throw their own under the bus."

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL RECRUITS: As you read this board, please recognize that Nebraska fans in general are not like those who post here. The posters here represent a fringe element and their views are far more radical than the typical fan. I can say this with confidence because I know many, many, many Husker fans and they are nowhere near as extreme, nowhere near as negative and nowhere near as judgmental as are those who post here. So, please realize that the majority of NU fans are supportive and reasonable.

Go Big Red!!!

I agree that there are some people on this board that are coming out of their closets and bashing the Huskers, but you cannot escape this attitude no matter where you go. Imagine what is being said on the ND and Michigan boards....

Good point and quite true. But they do not have "the worlds best fans" either.

We'll be lucky to have any recruits left if our defense continues to play like this. What makes us the best fans in college football is how much we care about our team. Do you think a recruit would want to see a discussion board where all you could read is the drone of GBR GBR GBR regardless of how the team played? Recruits aren't stupid, and any recruit who doesn't live in a cave is probably thinking some of the same things that people have voiced here that have drawn your ire.

Since the new generation uses and explores the internet in their everyday life I agree with your statements. If a recruit hasn't seen all this his friends have and surely have copied it and emailed it along to the recruit.

There was mention of a player attending the Ball State game for an official visit. I have not seen any mention of his reaction to the team and the fans that were there. I think it would be interesting to here his take on the boos and the defense. Did fan reactions cost us a commitment already?

To the recruits who do read this post I'd have to say most Husker fans are not fair weather fans. During your young lives you have heard loud mouths nowitalls who stand out no matter where they are. Some just like to talk "trash" and want everyone to think they are the voice of the masses. In reality true fans would love to shut them up but do not want to make "buttocks" of themselves in the same manner.

I recently attended a Minor League baseball game Pawtucket vs Buffalo. Great game that went into extra innings. Just one loud mouth there. Seemed to want to be the show since he not only ridiculed the Ump from the first inning but players from both teams.

Funny thng to me and the only funny thing was he was wearing a Pirates cap and the teams playing belonged to the Red Sox and Cleveland.

Perhaps many of these disgruntled fans are CU Buffalo or K State Lurkers? Its really the only sensible thing I can think of. Surely not Okie's or Texans since they one group can't type and the other is always holding up their 2 outer fingers signifying second place.

I think what people are losing sight of in all this whining is the simple fact that this rage against the state of our defense really relfects how much we pride our tradition and our expectations of our players and coaches. I hope no recruit would be stupid enough to base his decision of schools on a fan message board somewhere on the bathroom wall of the internet. If that's a make or break deal, I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to understand what's in his head.

I think recruits probably have better things to do then sit and read our banter. IF they do, it would be on a recruiting site like rivals, where the conversations would be more about them than the team right now. I doubt any recruits are on HuskerBoard, because it's not primarily directed at recruiting.

My reply to FATIRISHHUSKER :

Hah. If I was a recruit my take on the game would be

1. (offense recruit) Wow what an offense I could really see myself scoring some points here. I can be a star.

2. (defense recruit) Wow they need me, want me. I can be a star

3. (Coaches) Wow so many. 83,000 of them. Hmmmmm maybe I should just stay home since I'll never be all they want me to be since I know I can't please everyone.

You have a valid point. That the husker faithful care and are passionate about their team is an awesome attribute that we, as Husker fans, share. Your point is well taken. I hope that the recruits see that. I would imagine that we agree in that no response to the team is actually worse than an outcry (or is it? not sure, maybe....)

My hope is that those on this line who post would simply be civil, kind and constructive --- even in criticism. And that those who post would not get personal, childish, swear (which is itself childish), rant and recognize that we too, in some small way, represent Nebraska and the University because we post as NU people.

A good rule of thumb --- post nothing that you would not feel comfortable posting were your children or your grandma there reading it! OK --- that is a little provincial, but the point is we need to represent the Husker nation with expressed character --- even in criticism.

Once more to the recruits --- in general, the Husker fans as a whole are far more civil, more mature, and more reasonable than are (some of) the posters here. So, please do not evaluate the Husker nation on the basis of the few who post here (or at Huskerpedia).

I think booing at home and the Octo/McKeon comments have more of an impact on recruits than what is said here...

My guess is that discussion boards play little to no effect on recruiting - well, with the exception of HuskerBoard, of course...

Folks, with the exception of a very few teams, most fans are disatissfied with some aspect of whichever team they follow. Which means their boards are lighting up with threads similar to what we have here.

If these kinds of boards had that kind of impact on recruiting, it would make it virtually impossible for any team to rebuild. But it happens - look at Florida when Zook was there. The message boards made what we're seeing at HuskerBoard look like a walk in the park. But their recruiting didn't suffer. And it hasn't been just Florida - you can apply that logic to any program.

You give the blog too much credit. Every team has one so it is nothing unique. The main factors would be how the team is doing, the coaches, facilities, academics and tradition of the program.

A band of mad posters will not disuade anyone.

bethel:

I would be surprised if there is a single recruit that is not a lurker here and/or on Huskerpedia --- at least in the cursory sense of wanting to see what the fans say and think about the team. Recruits do look at depth charts, rankings, and what the internet has to say about the teams they are evaluating as potentials. I know three recent recruits (not who came to NU, but to the university that I teach at) and they said recruits lurk on these lines consistently. It only stands to reason --- any information about the team is information they would check into.

So, what we say has impact. Irrespective of such, what we say should be reasonable, civil and decent on principle alone w/o consideration of the pragmatic implications connected to our posting.

What more likely would screw up the recruiting is firing Cozgrove too soon, like some of you want. This may have to be addressed after the season and hopefully after the 2008 recruiting season if things don't improve on defense. Isn't Cozgrove in on several of the commitiments, including Gabbert? Careful what you wish for.

Interesting..

And here I was thinking about finding the BBS sites of the teams we're recruiting against and forwarding the worst ones to our recruits.

I too was hanging out at one of the Gator boards during that time for entertainment and to occaisionally poke fun at how bad their fans must be for attacking each other and their Coaches/Players and I was pointing out how the Fans of MY team would never do that. (While secretly being afraid to prove it to myself).

Your view of any fanbase is really skewed by what a few posters write.
