iNTERESTING Use of the new CLOCK RULES

Wouldn't Penn State have a chance to decline one of those penalties. Its not a dead ball foul so they should have a chance to decline it and take the ball with some time left.

I think it is a dead ball fall, akin to illegal procedure on the offense. It's wierd though. Clock starts when ball is kicked. Penalty can't be called until the ball is kicked to start the clock.

It's a bad rule I think, but how is it any different that kneeling on the ball to protect a lead or why spiking a pass to stop the clock isn't intentional grounding.

That is a great idea, to get rid of some time. But don't you have to play at least 1 down before a half. I know there was time left for UW to kick again, but for instance if you did it and ran the clock out, wouldn't there have to be 1 untimed down before the half expired? The half can't expire on a defensive penalty. I think it is a great idea. 1 way to take advantage of a stupid rule. Maybe if more and more coaches do it, the NCAA will get rid of the rule.

All they need to do to prevent this obvious abuse is put the time wasted back on the clock.

ESPN has an article on this as well. According to one official:

Game officals have also been instructed to give out unsportsmanlike penalties if they believe the offsides are clearly intentional.

"Officials are not going to use that until it is very clear the team is circumventing the rule," Halpin said. "You can argue that in this case, but the game officials are in a tough spot here because by rule, what Wisconsin did was legal."

The burden of proof will have to be on the officials. That IMO is going to be a tough task.

I still don't understand why they changed the rule to have the clock run after every change of possession. They didn't change the amount of time they allow for commercials during timeouts. Isn't the game what was important. At any rate, if Wisconsin did that on purpose, that is a chickensh#t way to end a half.

It's called money. That is the sole purpose of the NCAA. College football is a money maker. Shorten down commercial times and you lessen profits for Miles.

I don't think it is a chickensh!t way to end the half, it is a good idea. It is making the new rules work to your advantage. Now if they start calling unsportsmanlike conduct then things will change. But since when was it unsportmanlike to commit a penalty? I think that is just one of the NCAA's petty way to get around a rule that they know is unpopular

I don't think it was shickenchit in this case.

I think the Wisconsin Coach was trying to make a statement against the assinine rule change..I was a little surprised JoPa didn't catch on.

Now if it was the end of the game...Then I could see breaking a coaches leg on the sideline.

(Must've happened later in the game to Joe)

It is chickensh#t but Penn State could have declined the penalty, taken the 5 yards and pressed on.
I think after the 2nd Offside, PSU returned the ball to their 5-6

You sure you want to start out that deep?

I'm not sure, but I think even if PSU declines, they don't get the time back on the clock.

Quick!

Somebody figgure out how many times you can do this (Including half the distance to the goal) before you're kicking off from your goal line!

They should put this Question on the Wonderlict Test!!! :woo

Technically you could never do this to where your kicking off from your goal line. A fraction of infinity would go into play there. :horns2

But you could get pretty damn close.
