Iowa fan perspective: Friday's game is a bit of a let down

So....what's the relationship between the two Fanbases/Schools out there?
Nebraska couldn't care less about Iowa. We have played 5 times in about the last 50 years. They are the same to us a Colorado St, Wyoming, Utah, MInnesota, Fresno St, Pacific, Arizona State, South Dakota St, or Florida Intl. If they are on our schedule, we care, it not, we don't give them a second thought. They are unspeakably offended by our indifference to them, and take that as a personal insult. They feel that we should be as obsessed with them as they are with us, and consider us to be arrogant and ignorant because we don't (ironic, isn't it?).

Iowa, however, is absolutely obsessed with Nebraska. Both Hawk and Clone fans hate us worse than the Nazis. Both are among the most thin skinned, inferiority complex ridden human beings I have ever been around. Both "fan" bases like to paint Husker fans as arrogant, conceited, stupid, and ignorant, which I find to be highly ironic. To Hawk fans, a Husker loss is better than a Hawk win. I can understand ISU hating Nebraska, since we have abused them since the inception of football, but Hawk fans are something else. They are complexed and offended that Nebraska sports media spends most of their time on Husker football. They are offended that people in Nebraska have the audacity to wear Husker shirts and support our team. They act as if Nebraska is a territory of Iowa, and we should be thankful that the great Ukniversity of Iowa allows us and our program to exist (talk about arrogant). I am honestly afraid for the mental well being of any Hawk fan that comes to Lincoln Friday. They might just see about a hundred thousand people wearing red chanting "Go Big Red!!!!!" I don't think that with their fragile mental makeup, that they can handle such attrocities. They liken a little good natured ribbing from a Husker fan to a Husker fan walking into their family holiday dinner, punching their dad in the face, calling their mom a whore, peeing in their baby's bottle, and taking their wife back into their bedroom to have sex with her.

I don't know if I have seen a more sensitive, more inferior fan base. Maybe texa$$ fans, but I think that even Whorn fans have thicker skin.
This is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen on Al Goes mighty invention. It's easily top five. However its nice to see Hunter74 is just as big a tool on his own board as he is on ours.

The reality is Iowa fan recognizes Nebraska football historically is head amd shoulders above Iowa. We also realize the last decade Nebraska has been a completely different team, very similar to Iowa. We don't begrudge you for dwelling on the past, as if our history was what yours is we probably would too. Well we might begrudge you a bit, but only because your last ten years is a bell of a lot more relevant to who you are now than the back to back title are.

I'm not exactly 74Hunter's favorite person, so take this as a reply from a guy not prone to pumping sunshine and roses at him, but 74Hunter's post pretty much mirrors my (albeit limited) experience with Iowa Fan. There are exceptions, and this isn't intended to paint the whole fan base with a broad brush, but the bottom line is, I've seen far more of what 74Hunter posted than evidence to the contrary.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised Friday with all the Iowa fans coming to Lincoln. Hopefully they'll be great. I'm going to approach them just like I did the Northwestern, Ohio State and Michigan State guys. But I'm not exactly holding my breath.

Meh, maybe I'm not the norm, but I couldn't have cared less about nebraska until this year.
Definately not the norm Duff, I've lived in Iowa all my life. Became a Husker fan in the early 90's when I started playing football in middle school. Since then NOTHING, but Iowa fans running their mouths. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of decent Iowa fans, but good god there are some bad ones man. I mean I literally have a picture of me standing in front of my dad's patrol car when I was 5 years old in an Iowa jersey and I got drove away from being a Hawk fan having grown up in Iowa?! What's that say?

That seems eminently clear.
Correct. At one point you say that 8 wins is nothing to b!^@h about, then you say that this team has not lived up to your expectations.

So to be clear, what were your expectations?

Knapp, nothing could be further from the truth. I have always respected your opinions, and how you have handled yourself as a MOD, even if I disagreed with you. I have the feeling that you don't have the same mutual respect.

C'mon man, this is all in good fun. It's just football, and I have never outright insulted Iowa or its program. I have no reason to.

The reality is Iowa fan recognizes Nebraska football historically is head amd shoulders above Iowa. I totally disagree with you on this. Iowa (and Iowa St) fans constantly remind us that its "Not the 90's anymore!!!111!!!!" as if we didn't know that. We realize that our last 10 years have been a time of turmoil. As I have said, and I would hope that you can see, Nebraska is far more "important" to Iowa than Iowa is to Nebraska, speaking only in football terms. I just don't know why.

I will say this Duffman, some of the iowa fans i work with fit that description. I dont even need to bring up the 90s and it gets thrown in my face. I think when some people, especially the ones in the western part of state get the us vs the world mentality. Its kind of what i experience at work, when your the only husker fan in a sea of hawk fans. Or your the only hawk fan in a sea of husker fans. Its easy to get really butt hirt really quickly when a couple of people are ganging up on you. I take a different approach when it comes to football. When i became a husker fan i heard all about what that ment to the older crowd. My grandpa who passed away at 90 (lung cancer but smoked lucky non filter all the way to the end) sat me down on one knee when i was 6 and told me what it meant to be a husker fan. He was one of those guys who took the writings on the stadium to heart. When you grow up in Grand Island thats what you do, you root for the huskers. Long story short is i dont puff out my chest and boast to the high heavens about wins and be humble with the losses. Hawk fans, i dont understand the hate but i am more then willing ot have a talk about football. Leave the trashtalk to the people who actually play the game.

The first part of your reply answers the second. I made two simple statements about this team, the sum of which equates to, "It's not how many games we've lost, it's how we lost them."

And for some reason, you're trying to extrapolate that into some big issue. I have no idea why you're doing that, but this dogged questioning about this simple concept doesn't really seem like you're treating me with mutual respect. Seems like there's some kind of agenda.

Well come Duffman, Good to read a view from the other side. This game coming up may not mean much on a national scale [except for a bowl bid] but any Husker game to me, is still a big deal. As I am sure it is to any die hard Iowa fan. This has been a hard year to figure out. Not quite the way many of us thought it would go. These game between us may still decide the division, some years. Just not this year. I like the idea of playing you guys on Thanksgiving weekend, especially if its for all the marbles, in the Legends. Hope you can hold up your end, I know we will.

You guys are going down this game. :throwdabones1:

GBR!!!

I hate to burst your bubble but its foolish to say the game is more important to Iowa fans. The reality is its just another B10 game. I mean I guess there might be some who take more satisfaction from beating you guys than let's say Purdue, but its not like this game somehow defines our whole season just because its Nebraska. Obviously its a big game for both teams as its the last game and to some degree will go a long way in defining whether or not the season was successful, but thats more of a function of where it is in the schedule. I can tell you personally there are lots of games thst mean more to me, wisky, scUM, the real NU...

Maybe its a bigger issue on the western side of the state. The SW side in particular is pretty backwoods and hillbilly, its almost as bad as Nebraska. That said I guess I don't understand why being a Target for some fans is reason to look down on them, I take it as a compliment (btw it drives me nuts when Iowa fans do this to ISU also)

It just seemed like you were vague in what you were saying.
Anyhow, I do have a question for you, I'll try to pm you about it.
