Is Husker Football an Important Part of Your Personal Identity?

Yeah. And we're only calling for firings because in at least 3 of these losses, the coaches are absolutely at fault.
Because the coaches are out there on the field executing the plays (or not)??? Time to face the fact that maybe, just maybe our players aren't as "elite" as we want to think they are. In the B1G they have choices of campuses, St. Paul, Evanston, Ann Arbor, Bloomington, Madison...many much cooler and more fun places to be than Lincoln. The rest of the conference isn't afraid of us and doesn't care about our history. We are just another game on the schedule. We need to come to grips with that.

Maybe we should start a discussion about returning to the Big XII...at least some of those teams also remember when we were great.

No, they're not part of my identity. But I have lived and died with them with them for over 40 years. Being heavily emotionally invested in a team does make it feel like they are "your" team, and when they suffer, you do too.

The chastising of disgruntled fans, which is all this thread is about (albeit thinly veiled) is just as bad as the ones that are going completely off the deep end.

It must be nice to set up on the proverbial high horse as the "good" fan, who is above criticizing and is the champion of the program, defending it against all the nay sayers. Oh Puke!

Guess what, we all love the Huskers just as much as you

Come to grips with it? NEVER. Never will I accept that Nebraska can't or won't get back to relevance. And to absolve the coaches for these losses is just an insult to the kids leaving their hearts on the field.

Nope. This sucks and hurts but I'll go run errands and hang out tonight and everything will be just fine, because it's a game played and coached by people I don't know and that don't care about me. I'm a fan for a lot of reasons, and one of them is to be entertained. If you don't like the idea of losing, then be a fan of something other than sports, because that is what makes sports great - you never know the outcome.

The reactions of so many online are beyond childish it's mostly hilarious but also a good dose of pathetic.
Seems like vegas always knows the outcomes lol

What the hell gives you the right to put any of us in a class you don't know any of us from anyone yet you're going to play judge and jury on how we react when something that we hold dearly decides to take a crap for six games and you're going to tell us how to feel that makes 0 sense man
Hard to know you with only six posts I reckon. By the way. This is a message board. People post their opinions. With respect to your comments. I'm guessing you have never coached any sort of team, except perhaps pee wee baseball or such. I suspect you've never played at a college level. Nor have 98% of the people on this board. But they, rightfully so, can come on here and make comments about things with which they have little or no experience. See....that is how a public message board works. People post opinions. Some people will agree and some will disagree. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. Learn to enjoy it rather than being offended....unless the offense it real....then just learn to live with it.

Reread the post. I clearly said the "good fans" also criticize the team, players, etc. They just don't make it personal. Also, I don't believe I placed myself in the "good fan" segment. So my opinion doesn't coincide with yours, I am on a "high horse"? And finally, my comments didn't say anyone group liked the team more than the other..just how they choose to express it. I have never been on a high horse. I"ve high on horse a couple times, and been high with whores a couple times, but equine pursuits don't agree with me.

It means a lot more to me than it should. I swore up and down I wouldn't let this game get to me like last week. But here I am, completely deviated over a college football game.

I don't know what bothers me more, the heartbreaking loss or the fact that I let it effect me this much. Pretty pathetic of me.

Is this the thread where we pretend we don't know how sports fanaticism works?

Of course people are going to be pissed when the team loses. That's half the fun.

Most ppl dont know sh#t. That's what ive learned in 6 years on huskerboard. And myself included. LOL

I have been a fan sense 1865 (nearly a hundred years longer then the OP)

I have my own test for real fans. Those who send me only 9.99 in cash are real fans the rest will be labeled as non fans. (meaning you have to cheer for Texas like all of us real fans knew you always secretly did.)

Send your checks now fans. Rest just keep being 'fake' fans.

Losing games like this sucks. I've been a Husker fan since '65, listening with my grandpa on the radio.

It seems there are at least three groups of folks on this board.

1. People that love Nebraska Husker Football, period. They hate the losses like everyone else, and post legitimate opinions about staff and players. But they do so without malice, just well thought out opinions.

2. There are people who view themselves as Husker Fans, but have somehow let how the Huskers perform become an important part of their personal identity. These folks tend to spew hate at players and coaches at the drop of the hat, with no real thought opinions other than "such and such if an f@#$ing clown".

3. Trolls.

I can put up with the folks in groups 1 and 3. I feel badly for group 2. While they are vocal, gladly, outside of message boards they are a minority.
There are more than three groups. There are people for whom Husker football is a part of their personal identity who don't spew hate on the internet. Like you said they probably don't show up much on the message boards. They just get really sad when the heartbreaks are almost non-stop for 20 years. Thankfully I'm not one of these people but there are some in my family like that it suck a$$. I'm usually able to shrug off the terrible losses (there have been a lot as we all know) but this one has really gotten to me. And no, a grown man should not resort to alcohol to cope with difficult developments but I'm a deeply flawed person..?

I used to care a lot...it was obsessive. Then I got older and had real life problems and decided I can't invest myself like I used to. I watched the byu game this year...that's it.

I had fun with the coaching search but haven't paid much attention since
