It's interesting: Should Nebraska have offered?

the way i see it, he had his chance to walk on and declined. so everything else is moot, although he appears to be a nice back.

I have to agree with the title of this thread. Coming out of hs it would have been difficult to predict this much success for Woodhead—and NO, his success at Chadron would not necessarily translate to D1 ball. Just look at his rivals profile. He made a good decision to go to Chadron State. Nice to see him do so well there.

I agree. I think if he walked on at NU, he may have earned a scholarship by his Sr. year. He'd probably be a situational back, maybe even a return guy.

I saw a clip of him on Sports Extra last night... kind of meh. Of course, it is just one clip. I could easily picture a D1-level DB running him down from behind.

 
He's from my area, so I got to watch him play a few times. No, he should not have been offered a scholly. He's a great feel good story, but he's no different than other in-state kids that have excelled at D2 schools. I remember a few years ago when someone thought it was terrible a record setting QB at UNO from Cambridge wasn't given a scholly by NU. Woodhead's a good player. He's a great D2 player. I may not be sold on Lucky, but there's a drastic talent difference between the two. Woodhead isn't that big. We all know height and weight sometimes get boosted. With him being listed at 5-9, he's probably more like 5-7 to 5-8. 200 pounds is more than likely 185-190. He's just too small. They keep comparing him to Barry Sanders. Barry Sanders was an anomally. Very few, and I mean very few, running backs of that size and stature do anything at all in the NFL. There's a strikingly different feature as well amongst the two. Barry Sanders could cut on a dime. Woodhead is just fast.

I'm sure he'll get invited to the combines. However, I doubt he gets drafted if at all any higher than the 6th round. He'll definitely be a gamble by anyone who drafts him. If he makes a team, it will be as a return man only.

 
He says he has no regrets, so that's good. I was starting to feel real bad for the kid. But if he really thought he could have competed at this level, he should have walked on, just for himself. Anyways, good luck to him and hopefully he'll get drafted.

I sure that he is a good RB, but it is difficult to say how he would of done against faster, stranger D1 teams. Gaining yards against Wayne State, Adams State, and Washburn is much different than gaining yards against Texas, Oklahoma, and USC.

 
Wow! You guys can sure spin it. Coach Solich admits he may have made a mistake. (Can of worms--since recruiting was a major issue for the decline.)

Woodhead is a great athlete that excelled in every sport he played. I'm certained he would have fared just fine against D1 competition.

But that's a moot point and so is trying to convince others with the opposite opinion.

Can of worms? The article specifically stated that NO D1 school offered him a scholarship. So, how would have recruiting him helped FS in terms of recruiting? There are misses and gifts all the time. David Horne was supposed to be outstanding. We offered him a scholly and well he didn't pan out. Shanle was a walk on that is now playing in the pros. Woodhead would not have improved the FS rivals recruiting ranking at all. I guess I just don't see the recruiting can of worms you speak of. He may have fared well against D1 competition, but that's entirely speculative.

It's one thing to say he should have walked on, but why go walk on when a school out there is more than willing to give you a free education? I knew a kid from SW Nebraska that walked on when he had a full ride to Wyoming. He played some special teams while at NU. It's one thing to dream of playing for the big red, but it's entirely another to stare down at student loans after football and graduation.

If we're gonna stick with the WCO, give me a 6' fast running back anyday that can actually be seen on the field when the QB needs to dump off a short pass. Midgets are okay in the backfield in some offenses, just not the WCO. It would have been fun to watch how he did on options, but looking back I think he made a good choice of not coming to NU in light of everything that has transpired in the past few years. With his speed, he has a chance of making a pro team as a return specialist. Just be happy for what he's accomplished and the records he's broke rather than trying to turn a mole hill into a mountain.

Many valid points. I'm not claiming that getting Woodhead in his last class would have saved Coach Solich because his previous recruiting efforts already had him circling the drain. Coach Callahan and his staff seem to have a better eye for hidden gems so maybe they would have seen something. Hard to say.

I agree with his decision to go to school where it's paid rather than walking on. I don't know what his parent's financial situation was/is either.

It will be interesting to see if Mendoza can overcome his "midget" stigma and contribute to the team. Cory Ross didn't do too shabby in the WCO either.

Cinderella stories Do exist.

There's Bret Elliot of the San Diego Chargers (more recently), who played div2 football with my nephew.

Back when I was in school, Osborne almost offered my cousin with his last scholarship, but instead offered it to Chris Van Norman from our archrival..Chris ended starting two years at Monster.

Ozzy said my cousin was just a little too slow. My cousin took that as a challenge and worked even harder winning the 100m that year in the state track meet.

He got offers from a few div2 schools but accepted a track scholarship from NU and then walked on for Football..Ended up playing as a redshirt freshman, and then started the next 3 years (earning a Scholarship) and was drafted by Detroit at SE (but played in the CFL with Turner Gill).

So if you can dream it..There's always a chance.
