It’s Lonely on my Island

Husker nation is in disarray right now. Let’s face it. We’re in 1986 Chernobyl mode. Almost reaching 2007 October Callahan era. The wheels have fallen off the wagon. And here’s how I feel about it:

  • This season is in the toilet. We’re not going to a bowl. We’ll be lucky to score a B1G win in these last three games. And I'm not happy about it. At all. But no one can do anything about the nine games we've already played. They're in the history books.
  • The reason this season is in the toilet is because of those five heartbreaking losses. You remember them, right? The Hail Mary. The OT brainfart. The bleh offense/defense against Illinois. The last second Brazilian FG. NW’s pick six and lumbering QB runs. Seems like we’ve shot ourselves in the foot all season long due to questionable coaching decisions (e.g., clock management), questionable execution (e.g., Can we knock down a pass, please?), and largely some terrible luck. We are snake bit this season. (I didn't forget the Purdue loss. We didn't put ourselves in a position to win that one. /facepalm)
  • Shawn Eichorst has the ONLY vote that matters in regard to Mike Riley’s tenure prospects. The talking heads don’t have a vote. The beat writers don't have a vote. The fans don’t have a vote. Not even the boosters have a vote. Sure, all of these folks can voice their opinion and apply pressure. Lots of pressure. But at the end of the day only Eichorst’s opinion matters. And I don't think Mike Riley is going anywhere. Not under Eichorst's watch.
  • It doesn’t help our team or our future prospects to rip the program to shreds in thread after thread bagging on the staff and players, and calling for everyone to be fired. This just makes it harder for them to contain this thing and turn it around. Makes it harder to recruit.
  • At this point our biggest need is a good recruiting class. Oh sure, there are other things that need work. Plenty of work. Schemes, technique, attitude, and so on. But with a good recruiting class we'll be headed in the right direction. If we whiff on the '16 class, we'll be mired in mediocrity for even longer. Maybe years longer.
  • Finally, I for one am not going to add to this steaming pile that is our ’15 season by dragging the coaches, players and administration through the mud. Do they deserve criticism? Sure. Will it help at this point? No.

This is the way I feel right now. And it’s quite lonely on my island. I suspect there are some on HB who may have different opinions.

Very well said NUance. This season has not gone like we hoped or expected, but I've grown really tired of the negativity. I understand that the fan base is frustrated, and we have ever right to be. I just feel like the overwhelming amount of negativity has been too much. Yes, this season has been horrible on all sorts of levels. I would agree that some of the coaching decisions have been very bad and have directly led to losses. I also have serious concerns about the administration and the coaching staff going forward.

But, at the end of the day, I will always be a Husker fan. I will always support and cheer for the team and appreciate the players for their efforts. Nobody saw the season going this way, but nothing will ever stop me from being proud to be a Husker.

Don't be lonely NUance. I agree with everything you said. I just have a lot tougher time controlling my emotions and what I write on the board. I also am quite a bit more pessimistic about giving these guys more time. I sure could be wrong but I just no longer think Riley and crew is the answer. So I am not wont to give them more time. Unfortunately there just isn't a real good option. Rip the Band-Aid and make the inevitable change as soon as possible or, wait an acceptable amount of time and then make the change. Both have their downfalls for the program and I don't see any good options other than MR resigning which is highly unlikely.

So, I am trying my best to post less and trying to not be needlessly spreading doom and gloom, even though that is about all I see in our near future. I will not be actively calling for MR or SE's heads like a lot of posters seem to be doing in every thread. I don't think fans demanding change will help the program at this time even though I do think change will soon be inevitable. We're just in a very bad place now and I'm a guy who really thought Riley would be good for the program and I thought I could give him at least a couple years to prove it. It's been so bad and with nothing positive I just don't see it working out any longer. Hopefully they can secure some good recruits that will be valuable in another system because IMO they won't ever, and shouldn't ever, get the chance to play in the MR, Langsdorf, Banker system.

NUance is on lonely island,

refusing to give in to hate.

Resisting the dark side of anger,

Accepting of this season's fate.

His solitude soon will be broken.

His monk-like reflections will cease.

By a ship full of friends and libations

erasing the silence and peace.

"Grab a beer" say the red-cladded people,

As they set up to watch the game.

The sun sets on Lonely Island,

"Hey, thanks guys. I'm glad you came."

Agree with everything you said, couldn't have put it any better myself.

The staff deserves to be criticized but I feel, and have felt, for a while that their has been too much negativity. Doesn't help the program in any way once it reaches those levels.
