Joe Ganz on OWH The Bottom Line today

Ganz - reason why Fife (and other Nebraska kids who come to NU but don't get much PT) is the "chance" to play. Fife struggles learning in the classroom and taking it to the field. Lot of mental mistakes at QB. As a coach, it's hard to trust a guy when he struggles in practice.

S Callahan - tough for QB's and RB's from Nebraska to beat out QB's from CA, TX, FL, and other states that have bigger/better programs where kids can get exposure and coaching.

S Callahan - tough to take chances on kids who are rated "lower in recruiting rankings" because everyone is evaluating your recruiting rankings.

Ganz - watch the kids who are going to Alabama and Auburn on film and it's tough to see those guys, compared to the "B list" guys.

Ganz - can I realistically get the top guys or top 5 QB's. Most of those guys are going to stay closer to home. Need to lock in the best players within the 500 mile radius. Defense is good because of Collins from KC and Valentine.

S Callahan - Patrick Witt was a jerk, and their family was used to getting what they wanted. Family expected Witt to get the QB job over Lee in '09.

Ganz - Witt had very small hands

Ganz - Callahan made a lot of promises on PT. Bo and staff never misled kids during recruiting. Come in and earn your way in.

That is what I liked about some of the previous coaching staff, the ability to turn 3 star rated guys into NFL caliber players and All-Americans. Its not an easy job, and it takes both coach and player to work at it, and I felt certain players and coaches never got the recognition they deserved for it.

There have been a lot of questions regarding player development. Some kids were able to develop, some of them weren't. I think the best ones were guys that were willing to put in the work themselves. Braylon Heard and Aaron Green realized they weren't going to outwork Ameer, so they left.

Ganz - we were really close on Ezekial Elliot. Elliot's dad was friends with Vince Marrow. Elliot thought he could play sooner at Ohio State.
