My understanding is that George Floyd once held a gun to a pregnant woman's stomach while his friends robbed her apartment. While I also understood that Floyd had been a respected community volunteer, it really put a damper on holding him up as anything more than a victim. I don't know how long ago the robbery had occurred, but the dude was kiting checks to buy cigarettes at the community convenience store just prior to his death.
So now I"m wondering if the pregnant woman story was legit or trumped up exaggeration from the right. So I just Googled it and found the claim had been debunked. Floyd had in fact held a gun on a woman while his friends robbed her apartment, but she wasn't pregnant. So there's that. I guess.
I'd still keep him off my mural.
I would also keep him off my mural, and recognize that he was a mixed bag of strengths and struggles who helped many and significantly harmed at least one. Regardless, none of that, good or bad, is material to his status as an icon for the fight of racial equality.
