Kansas Man Creates Fiber-Optic Turf

Oh great. So now Penn State will be able to actually move the OB lines during the play, instead of just getting the ref to cooperate on those sketchy sideline catches.

/ JK. This is a way cool tech. :thumbs :

Interesting idea. Curious what it would cost - probably a couple nickels. Being as you can do basically all that with computers for viewers on TV, I'm not sure how practical it is but it's pretty sweet.

so would the entire field be fiber optic. Cause if so that'd be cool as you can change the field color and logos every week without repainting. So that'd be a huge start up cost but probably cheaper over the long run.

Ah the advancements of technology! This is just the precursor to having electronic measuring devices that will pinpoint the exact location of the ball. It could be pretty sharp if all this leads up to accurate spots, first down recognition, breaking the plain of the goal assurances and stuff like that. Would need some devices on the each tip of the football to make this happen I believe. chuckleshuffle

Could see like blinking end zones and stuff like that..... the "HUSKERS" disappears and is momentarily replaced by a big flashing "TOUCHDOWN!".

Of course, like anything, the technology will eventually be abused and people will use it for advertising.

That looks pretty freakin' sweet. I don't think they should allow the entire field to be fiber optic, but just the yard markers. I realize that they want to be able to put different visual things on the turf, but technology never ceases to fail, and I can see it causing a controversy at some point.

yea I think thats the idea. and it would cool for the fans at the game to see the first down marker, but i wonder if/how the cold would effect it

News just came out that the World Cup is planning on doing just that for goals in 2014.

We were the first college program to introduce Vision Boards. We were the first to use the "field turf". We might as well be the first to incorporate this new idea as well.
