i am just wondering if Coz is the right guy for defensive coach at nebraska. he sure had trouble getting his guys to buy into his system last year, IMHO. sure Pelini was popular and the guys liked him, but i am wondering if Cos can relate to college players like Pelini could.........anyone see it different?

I'm not sold on Cosgrove. What credentials does he have besides being BC's buddy? If we struggle again this year with the talent that's coming in to make immediate impact (LB and DL) I hope BC is strong enough to choose what's best for the team over friendship if Cos isn't the man for the job.

If we can pressure the QB this year with the front 4 we should be a whole lot better than we were last year.

 
I also question his decision to run almost exclusively man-to-man coverage. If you are going to do that all the time, then why weren't we blitzing. Isn't that why most teams play man coverage, because it gives them the opportunity to rush at least six guys? Playing man and rushing only four didn't fit our talent (or lack of) this year. But, I guess running the WCO with an option team didn't really fit our talent either. To be fair, I agree with hoyamann. We'll probably have to wait until Coz gets the talent he wants to run things the way he wants them run.

 
thanks for the replys......i agree with both posters and their thoughts...time will tell, but most of the defensive talent was the same as the year before, i am still just trying to figure the "fall-off" in play........it just seemed like the boys were confused with the defensive philosophy.......it was just painful to watch what i considered would be at least their strong point with some consistency......sure the oposition had talent, but we just seemed to be standing around out there so many times, with a look of confusion IMHO....and that is indicative of a coaching prob..

lots of good defensive players coming on board this fall, so if the results aren't better, we may indeed have a prob with BC's buddy.........hopefully I am wrong

........also a good coach will coach/play his guys to their strength, (zone or MTM)not just to his system (at least not until the talent arrives to make that scheme work in his system) if he wants good results NOW.......i think both BC and KC were a little more caught up with instilling their "systems" whether the talent was available or not, which probably cost NU some wins, in the short run at least....

i agree that the verdict is still out on Coz...

but i think coz runs a pretty solid "D". he had some good teams with the badgers, mayb not national championship qulaity, but good solid defenses. with not as much talent as what we have and whats on the way.

from some of the recent articles, i think almost as much blame can be placed on a few disgruntled players. some have left and there may be more to leave, but that is ultimately good for the team!!!

also, it appears now that the coaching staff decided to make radical changes on both the offense and defense, rather than play to to talent level of the current players. but, it appears to be paying big dividends in the recruiting game!!!!! would we still have the same recruiting class with a slow progression to the new systems????? not!!!!!!!!!!!

lets give the boys some time to make things work....in the end, cally will do what has to be done if it gets to that.....ultimately its his head on the chopping block....

better things to come this fall.....watch and cheer

 
I think we need to play more zone coverage in Coz scheme

also we need some pass rushing on quarterbacks

need to pressure the quarterbacks to get turnovers

also we need to blitz i like "old school" nebraska when they blitz when it was an obvious rushing play.

 
I think if we get some kind of rush with the front four we should be ok. We really need speed at the OLB spots also. The verdict is still out on Cosgrove though. There are plenty of people who want his head but give him another year first. McBride struggled for along time and his unit cost NU the 83 championship. I think he turned out alright. Man to Man does work in College, but without a pass rush it is very average.

 
I think that the reaction of Wisconsin fans should say it all, when they were dancing in the streets the day he left Madison.

He will probably have a slow, fat Big 11 style D, one that will get shredded by the likes of OU, UT, Tech (again), A&M, and KSt (again). NU went from top 10 to middle of the pack, and UW went from middle of the pack to Top 10.

Im sure that was either Solich's fault, or just a coincidence, though.

i was at the missouri game and I was in heaven. It was a beautiful day, the BLACKSHIRTS were kicking butt and it was like the old days. The punt that was blocked was right in front of me and it was beautiful. THE PREGAME SPEECH BY TOMICH AND MCBRIDE WAS THE ONLY THING THAT I CAN FIGURE MADE THE DIFFERENCE. Our defense did not play like that again. I think the older players just did not like the changes and refused to play their hardest. I heard from Tom Rudd, Barrett's dad, that in the tunnel on the way out of the Colorado game that Barrett said, "I'd like to kill that son of a B***H" refering to Callahan.

Defense is all about heart and the older guys just did not have it. Barrett had a hell of a year, but where was everyone else? It was Rudd or nothing. If the older players are not going to play for their coaches, get them the hell out of here and get some freshmen in who will at least try.

How does a defense go from one of the best in the nation, to one of the worst in one year, AND IT IS THE SAME PLAYERS????It is probably not Cosgroves fault. Time will tell.

That may be the worst, most un-intelligent post I have ever read. Even the sp/bc butt-kissers think that coz-worthless is horrible.

If the only thing that changed was the coaches, gee, wouldnt it figure that they are the problem??????

I guess play makers like Demorrio Williams and TJ Hollowell among others don't matter. I am not saying Cosgrove is a winner, I am saying that he isn't the only thing that changed on that side of the ball.

Playmakers certainly matter, but GOOD coaches find a way to turn guys into playmakers. Guys like Jamel Williams, Ed Stewart, Troy Dumas, O McFarlin, Brian Shaw, Lorenzo Brinkley were not playmakers at linebacker when they came out of high school. GREAT coaches put these guys in posistion to make plays, the found the guys to get the job done, unlike this group of coaches.

Coaching is about putting the team in the best position to win, which this staff has not shown the ability to do.

The only time the defense woke up was when former NU players and McBride talked to the players. Makes you wonder what Cosgrove was doing all year. I know Bill threw this staff together quickly last year, I was hoping he would make some tweaks to improve it but I guess I was wrong.

 
I hope the Blackshirts get it together in the offseason. I love defense and I was at the Missouri game when they showed up. It was awesome. I think theywill bebackthis year.
