How do you drop Tennessee but leave ND, Penn State and Florida State?

How is Michigan State not on the same level of Wisconsin? They've been, more or less, just as successful as UW recently and have a better history.

I got to thinking what this list is. You are an average American male (not a sports fan in general), flipping through the sports channels on a Saturday afternoon. If one of these teams are playing are you more likely to stop and watch a bit? Its like name recognition polls in politics.
