KJJ Video

As for Keyshawn's video, while I'm not a big fan of them it's certainly one of the less objectionable ones. Certainly doesn't hurt that he's a Husker.

Personally, I think they're really awkward and dumb - every single one. But, sitting them through is slightly more enjoyable when they commit to Nebraska in the end.

It's kind of like the difference between a doctor doing open chest surgery to get a tumor and saying "we got it all" as opposed to "we couldn't find it."

With snapchat, IG and everything else, I just don't get too worked up about guys sharing their commitments like this. It's no flashier than how most live today on social media.

I just wish this commitment was a real commitment and not a "non-binding verbal."

The system of recruiting MUST change, but there are so many entrenched interests working against it.

One thing I find really humorous about recruiting, particularly these videos, is the the feathers they ruffle with competing interests. For example, Matt Schick was on local radio several weeks ago once signing day was over. He said ESPN had planned to have a full ESPN crew go to a certain recruit's school in order to broadcast his decision. They had it all set up with the recruit, school, parents, etc.

However, just a few days before signing day, the same recruit released a video he had helped produce with Bleacher Report. ESPN had to call the recruit and basically say they were no longer going to come broadcast his decision because he had already given it away.

I don't offer that for any reason other than for conversation. I found it very interesting.

As long as a kid comes to the team ready to work and get better, I don't care if they have a parade through Times Square to announce their decision.

That is interesting. That's what people don't really seem to appreciate: recruitniking has become a way to monetize the offseason. It's a huge money industry. nothing in the world would be better for recruits than for the NCAA to go to a true "offer and acceptance" paradigm, but that would really really hurt the recruiting sites, so those money interests lobby against fixing the system for the benefit of the players.

A side note on your story: isn't bleacher report owned by ESPN now? That must have caused some problems if they weren't communicating.

It also makes me wonder what money exchanges hands in the process of vying for those broadcast rights.

I think they're owned by Turner Broadcasting System or they're someway tied into that, but I'm not 100% sure. And, of course, ESPN is currently owned by Disney.

The hype around this recruit is approaching epic proportions. As is this renewed focus on recruiting California, which ended up being a misguided approach under Callahan.

p.s., both Valentine and Collins, just this year, were highly recruited guys who chose and excelled at Nebraska. Randy Gregory was highly recruited out of JUCO and chose Nebraska. Not to mention be Davis twins. The rewriting of history is breathtaking.
Why, can you name another year where NU started off with a 2/3 star & two 4 star players?

You are right NU has done well recruiting OL's & has done ok on DL's. The difference with this pickup is the ability to draw other players. KJJ's name alone will help NU land a few other players. Marquel Dismuke would have never came to NU had it not been for KJ Sr setting up the trip for those guys. You should be excited about this committment he is only going to help Riley & staff lockdown more talent. This could end up being one of the most highly rated classes NU has seen in a long time. I would sure love to see NU pull in a top 10 class. Holmes & Gebbia will go a long way to helping & we now have a guy in their locker room pointing NU's way. On top of everything we got a solid WR commit.
I am hoping that KJ senior influences a lot of talented players. He knows his son needs a talented OL, RB to succeed, and for jr. to get to important games NU also needs a defense. Come on senior, hit the campaign trail!

Seemingly more plentiful because we had a system for taking advantage of and utilizing it.

As I've said dozens of times, NU should "go outside the safety lines" to supplement classes, not as a basis for them. Going to those regions wasn't a new thing in early 90s, nor did it redefine what NU had been doing.

That 1997 team had like 11 native Nebraska starters including at every offensive skill position. Yes, we can list some phenomenal players from far away but the heart of 30+ years of teams was from Nebraska and its border states.
I don't necessarily disagree with the above, CM, but just to be clear:

when someone posts about Keyshawn Johnson, Jr. committing to Nebraska, your first instinct is to quell the mild celebration, and frame it as part of a larger problem involving Mike Riley.

Again, I'm only going by the things you actually post.

Actually, this particular thread is more about his mode of announcement. It's evolved some, but I'd still say it's connected to the hype surrounding his announcement. To your request for why I made the comment I did, I'd say it has a little to do with the posts basically saying this is the best recruit "maybe ever" (granted, for reason other than FB expectations) and that "Pelini would've ever won someone like KJJ because of the offensive style and recruiting focuses at the time" even though the 2011 class had like 6 players that were more highly ranked both nationally and at their positions than KJJr currently is. Personally, I couldn't care less about the recruiting rankings that try to separate the #15 WR from #27 and from #42 as though that's possible. But, my general comment here was also in response to a bunch of comments here. I just didn't want to muck up the thread that was actually about celebrating the commitment with "negativity."
