Five-Star Recruit
First off. SP fired Coach that was winning 75% of his games and had played for a National Championship. Regardless the outcome, he did get the Huskers there and that is a fact. He did have a down year of 7-7. That was a direct result of McBride retiring as DC. He made changes to his staff and rebounded to a 10-3 Team. SP had a hard time finding a Coach. Not many would want to take a job that job security is an issue. The perception was 10-3 gets you kicked out of Lincoln.
Callahan tried to sell Husker Nation on the WCO as this state of the Art offense. It worked on selling it to the fans but the truth is the West Coast offense is over 2 decades old. San Fran ran it in the early 80's and maybe as early as late 70's. There is nothing new or state of the art about it. When you look back at the great San Fran Teams, they did something Callahans version of the WCO doesn't do. That is Stretch the field with the long Ball. Every week, every game you see Teams go deep but not Nebraska. It happens to the Blackshirts every week.
Things didn't go well and the spin factor began. For 4 years now you heard it was Solich fault and Solich players didn't fit the System and were not good enough. Using that the players are not good isn't going to get them to play hard for you. That was a BIG Mistake! They also used the recruiting as a sign of great things to come.
Here we are in year 4. This husker Team is the worse in 50+ years. That's right we have gone back a half decade.
The Defense has no passion. The Zones they run leave huge holes in the secondary, puts no pressure on QB's and can't stop the run. The Scheme is bad and we don't have a head coach who knows how to fix it. That is right, it is Callahans job to step up and fix any aspect of the game that is broken. All great head coaches know every aspect of the game. Yes they may primarily work with one side of the ball but they know enough to step up and fix things when the DC isn't getting things done.
Our O-Line is Big but slow. On top of that the blocking schemes have them moving side ways. They never go forward. Let be realistic here. 3rd and 2 situations, you need a push up front to get the first down. The box is filled with 8 or 9 men. You can't zone block against that. You have to man up and get the push needed to get the first down. Another problem is penalties. We have a player that starts on the O-Line that has been a penalty Magnet since he got here. Not going to mention his name but why is he still starting when he cost the team so many yards and even first downs?
Recruiting isn't as good as they are spinning it. Tom Osbourne once said that it isn't the Kids you sign, it is the ones you lose. He said it is important to show recruits exactly what will be expected of them and exactly what to expect. I don't think Callahan has done that well as he has lost some big star recruits. But than they just spin it and Husker Nation says we don't want them here any ways. Truth is they never should of been here and a year or two of a wasted Scholership would have been saved if Callahan had presented these Kids with the truth of what to expect.
This brings me to mismanaging players. Too many players are being moved from one position to another. Callahan is wasting good athletes because they are not seeing the field because they do not know their new position well enough to get significant playing time.
Developing talent doesn't happen in Lincoln anymore. One of the spins used on Husker nation is making them think that a 4 or 5 star recruit is an immediate impact player on the college level. This is the furthest thing from the truth. They are nothing more than a High School All-Star. They are NOT College All-Stars and not even close to it. Their claim to fame is being dominate against a bunch of under sized and slow High School Kids. They would be lucky to see more than 1 or 2 future D-I players lined up against them on Friday night. They have to be developed in to College players.
More on that is the fact that even when games get out of Control, we do not see the projected starter for the next season get any reps. Games like the last 2 weeks is the perfect time to help develop a QB. You can get him playing time against the other Teams #1s. He will be more prepared next season.
So go ahead and buy the It's Solich Fault or it is Osbournes Fault for naming Solich Head Coach spins if you want. But it is nothing more than a lie.
