Lincoln-Land of the 100

Date: July 9th, 2005
With retail stores expecting a mad rush in less then a week in anticipation of NCAA 2005 being released and ESPN begining to put together its list of who is who in college football, one thing that is catching the eye of the nation again is Nebraska recruiting. The Husker Coaching staff has begun to make several teams nervous and with no end in sight, recruiting is coming in just as strong.
A month ago, Rivals released its top 100 players in the nation. Dropped from that list were several key players such as D.J. Jones, and added were unknowns, such as Quarterback Mitchelle Mustain and Jake Locker. None the less, Nebraska still had 2 guys on that list that were heavily interested in Nebraska. Josh Freeman was one, A.J. Wallace was the other.
A month later, Nebraska seems to have pulled back into the Rivals 100 recruiting war visits. Less then a month ago, we had only 3 official visits scheduled to Lincoln, and that did not include any Rivals 100 player. A month later, Nebraska is FIRST in the nation in Rivals 100 players expected to visit while other heavyweight USC, Michigan, Florida, Florida St, and Ohio St all have 2 each and LSU with 1
Nebraska will be hosting 5 star prospects David Ausberry and Allen Bradford from the Rivals 100. Allen Bradford who is rated 7th best player in the top 100 and as the TOP linebacker in the nation and California this year will come calling on Lincoln during the season opener. Davis Ausberry, the 22nd best prospect in the nation according to Rivals100 and third best WR in the nation and California will come knocking the following weekend against Pittsburgh.
4 star prospects and Rivals100 members Jonas Mouton (45), Butch Lewis (52), Devin Ross (57), and A.J Wallace (63) will also be dropping by during the course of the season. But wait, there's more. Josh Freeman who has yet to schedule an official visit to Nebraska is also a rivals 100 player. That gives Nebraska 7 all together, and more Rivals100 players are on the horizon.
I will give a small analysis of where Nebraska stands with other Rivals100 players who are still currently favoring Nebraska.
Gerald McCoy: 5 star prospect and 14th ranked player on the 100 list. From Oklahoma City Oklahoma, a DT who is being recruited by John Blake and is on Blake's wish list. This guy has so many heavyweight programs recruiting him such as Oklahoma, USC, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, just to name a few in addition to Nebraska. I would not expect Oklahoma to receive an official offer due to the fact he lives within 10 minutes from the University of Oklahoma and could easily visit them unofficially every weekend if he wanted. The good and bad about that is this. With Oklahoma being so close, a couple of unofficial visits to campus could sway him to commit to OU. On the other hand, not visiting OU officially means it leaves the door for 1 other team to slide in and get a visit. Could Nebraska be that team? It's hard to tell at this point. 2 teams that will definetly get visits officially in my opinion will be USC and Miami. Notre Dame is also positioning themselves quite well for a visit. That leaves 2 slots open and Nebraska still could slide in, but he has not set any dates yet, so Nebraska still has a great chance. On a scale from 1-10, with 10 being confirmed visit, i would put our chances of him visiting officially at a 6 at this time.
Konrad Reuland: Without a doubt in my mind, he is the top tight end in the Nation and in California. Currently ranked 41st on the Rivals 100 list. Reuland will be visiting at the end of the month Lincoln for 2 days and the Nebraska coaches can't wait. With the loss of Matt Herian next year, Nebraska is looking for a special tight end to come in and steal that spot. Reuland currently favors 2 things. The West Coast offense, and playing time. Something Nebraska has to offer, but pulling him out of PAC-1O territory will be extremly difficult. Every Pac10 team has offered him, plus Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ohio St just to name a few. Nebraska has to impress him enough to make him want to come back for an official visit. One thing that plays against Nebraska is distance. Nebraska's chances are good but not great but Nebraska is not out of it yet. On a scale from 1-10, I would put our chances of him visiting officially at a 4 at this time.
Chris Bell: The 40th ranked prospect on the Rivals100 and 5th best WR in the nation. Florida is working him hard and Michigan isn't letting up. Coach Elmassian's top prospect this year and Nebraska won't go down without a fight. Currently does not favor any team. This is a guy i believe will eventually visit Lincoln for an official visit. Bell's Dean is a big Husker Fan and a graduate from the University. Bell has heard nothing but great things regarding Nebraska's support system for student-athletes. If i was a betting man, my money would come down to Nebraska, Penn St, Michigan, Florida and LSU as his top 5 official visits. On a scale from 1-10, i would put our chances of him visiting at a 7, but in the recruiting world, anything can change, as we saw with Cameron Elisara and Ryan Tolar.
Other players that could potentially visit include 25th ranked Stephen Schilling, 51st ranked Aaron Brown (OL), 56th ranked Allen Walker (DB), 72nd ranked Adrian Clayborn (DT) and 94th ranked DB Jai Eugence.
Last year Nebraska had 3 prospects with 5 stars and 11 prospects with 4 stars visit. Both 5 star prospects (Marlon Lucky, Zac Bowman) ended up as Nebraska commits while Rey Maualuga went to USC. Of the 11 prospects with 4 stars, Nebraska signed Phillip Dillard, Leon Jackson, Ndamukong Suh, and Harrison Beck, while losing out on James McKinney to Michigan, Dajleon Farr to Miami, Alonzo Horton to Auburn, Montario Hardest to Tennessee, Nyan "showtime" boateng to Florida, Marquis Wilson to Utah, and Averell Spicer to USC.
NU recruits D.J. Jones and Seth Jensen should receive 4 stars as well. For everyone who thinks our recruting is off this year compared to last year, i say what till September. In my opinion, Nebraska will finish with a top10 recruiting class when it's all said and done. You can quote me on that.
