Live Spring Press Confrence

Carl's talking about how big it is to have leaders at three levels of defense.

Someone asked him if he envisioned putting David at the Peso position. Carl said, "Yeah, IF I LOST MY MIND."

Carl is excited about Phonzie and what he can do this year and how he can teach the younger DBs.

Carl says this has the potential to be his best group here. They're fast and physical. But he won't underestimate the power of chemistry. Untalented defenses that have gelled have been great, talented defenses that haven't gelled have fluttered.

How much has Carl evolved in his four years here?

JP will be the D Line Coach, so Carl has more time to spend with all three levels. He spent time in the LB and DB meetings last year, but he spent more time in the DL meetings. He's excited to see his role grow, just as Bo's role is growing with experience in all areas of the team.

Most every call last year came after a bunch of discussion between both Carl and Bo.

Carl thinks Allen graduating and Stache being hurt gives the new guys a lot of opportunity to grow. Mentioned EMart, Ankrah, Williams and said they're all fighting for time on field, and all should contribute this year.

Reminds Carl of their first spring when Suh was hurt, and how that helped develop everyone.

He joked that he doesn't think much personally of Els or Raymond, but that he likes them both professionally. Els is as good of a teacher as he's been around and he thinks the Backers should grow a lot under him.

Lots of Redshirt Freshmen. Anyone going to be pushing for starting spots?

Carl says they all better be fighting for starting spots. That's why they recruited those guys. You don't create depth by recruiting guys as backups, you create depth by recruiting guys that could start if they step up.

They're still going to try to maintain Bo's culture. Want the kids to be physical and tough, play fast with confidence.
