This is not ranking the best players on the team. If so, Jordan Westerkamp and Brandon Reilly would be much higher and we'd probably have a running back on the list. Skill is certainly a heavy part of the discussion, but it's just as much about depth (or lack thereof) at each position. If any of the players below were injured or couldn't play one week, who's next up? Is it a big drop-off?

Simply stated: Which players could Nebraska least afford to lose in the quest to win the West?
1 - Tommy Armstrong

2 - Nick Gates

3 - Nate Gerry

4 - Kevin Maurice

5 - Joshua Kalu

6 - Freedom Akinmoladun

7 - Cethan Carter

8 - Jordan Westerkamp

9 - Brandon Reilly

10 - Sam Foltz

11 - Linebackers

12 - Khalil Davis/Carlos Davis/Mick Stoltenberg

13 - Jerald Foster

14 - Chris Jones

15 - De'Mornay Pierson-El

16 - Drew Brown

17 - Stanley Morgan

18 - Alonzo Moore

19 - Ross Dzuris

20 - Aaron Williams

Poll above so you can cast your vote. Choose your top five. We're not going to cheat like they did and list three or five guys on one line as most indispensable.

My five:

Nick Gates - Potential All-Conference pick a one of our thinnest positions

Nate Gerry - Leader both in deed and action on a defense that needs to improve greatly

Joshua Kalu - Really need him to be a star to bring some semblance or order to our pass defense

Freedom Akinmoladun - Probably our only shot (this year) at having an impact edge rusher. Showed promise before injury last year. Need him to step up.

Jordan Westerkamp - I know we're deep at receiver but he's TA's security blanket and maybe the most sure-handed WR in the country.

Gates- Going to be a staple on the OL like we haven't seen since Spencer Long, and could be better. He is nasty and I love that tone he will set for the unit.

Tommy- POB isn't taking his spot and no one else on the roster can do what Tommy can do, when he plays within himself

Freedom- Solid performer under Hughes, can't wait to see how much better he can be with Parella as his coach. If he didn't bull rush the Sparty OL into Cook which jostled the ball loose on the last play of the game, Cook could have connected with WR across the middle with time to call final TO and kick GW FG.

Foltz- Flipping field position and downing opponents <15 is not overlooked, but doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Carlos- The hype and ceiling on this kid screams 1st rounder. I know it's an all potential type of pick, but I have belief he will provide what we need up front.

I didn't like picking Carlos because hasn't played a down or proven anything, but these are my reasons why. 1) We have such a deep WR core, so I didn't go WR. B) Our secondary was poor last season, despite my feeling that Kalu and Jones stepped up in the last 1/3 of the season and Aaron Williams is becoming a monster. Third) Every single one of our linebackers were injured at one point last season and kids stepped up without missing much.
