Use a fairly broad, yet applicable, description of the job you seek. Don’t filter out potential jobs by using too narrow of a job description.
Use high quality bright white paper. No blues, light grays or any color except white. Prospective employers either make copies for distribution or else scan and email. Anything except bright white looks like crap. It’s a small thing, but every detail helps.
If you can, try to use an alternate route into the company other than solely relying on the personnel dept. Give your resume to a friend or colleague in the company and have them give it to the guy/gal doing the hiring. Or just call the guy/gal doing the hiring directly. The worst they can do is refer you back to personnel—and at least they will remember you if your resume makes it past the personnel filter, er, dept.
