Looks to be some major tension amongst alumni football players

On the subject of Ex players on the sidelines, it's a non issue imo. Maybe it would help with recruiting, but i don't think it's a major benefit. In all honesty, how many current recruits (outside of NE) would know of many of our ex players? A coaching staff should have the right to make certain decisions on how to run their team, and i'm fine leaving this one up to them. Seems to me it doesn't make much of a difference one way or another anyhow.

whoa! i beg to differ! listen to the kids that look at NU and they talk about growing up watching this team dominate and the tradition of great running backs and linemen. you think these kids aren't impressed before they get to high school? wrong, the whole thing starts well before then and they do look up to the legendary players and coaches from the past.

Hmmmm...

I seen Vince Young on the sidelines during the NU/Texas game last yr (freezing his butt off) and he was being a leader once again just as a cheerleader and essentially another coach on the sidelines. You'd be surprised how a former star player can influence your team during the heat of the battle.

Its a bigger asset than many of you think.

amen brother!

I will agree that having past players on the sidelines can be a huge asset. Wasn't one of the Peter bro's recently at a game or gave a pregame talk or something? Thought I heard that within the last 2 years.

2ndly, I can't believe this thread has grown to 2 pages and it will keep going. Gotta love the offseason.

We seem to be in on and landing a good amount of the kids that grew up watching us, i'm not concerned about them. Do you think that ex-players on the field would help us land guys at another tier like Clausen? i don't. I've never heard any recruit say that this was a factor in their decision for not picking us. And i don't see recruiting as underperforming right now either. i don't believe BC is above criticism, but recruiting isn't an area where it's deserved imo. i don't see the merit in second guessing the staff over this decision based on recruiting.

Sugalean brings up another issue with this, but again i'm not that worried. i have experience with this of sorts, and in my experience ex players on the bench or sidelines doesn't help much if at all and may even hurt at times. Mostly i wasn't aware they were present, but the times i was it was more a distraction that anything. Others, of course, might have a different experience. But, I doubt either way it made a huge difference to the outcome of the game or season.

i'll say my piece on this one more time and be done with it. it's not a make or break issue one way or another. i can see pros and cons and neither makes that big a difference imo. if BC thinks it's not worth it or is not a good idea, then i'm fine with that decision. if he were to change his mind, i'd be fine with that too. The issue just isn't important enough to care about, imo.

Its kind of like you have say your dad on the sidelines. You know you want to do it in front of dad. I know I once hit a home run in a game with the bases loaded and it happened my dad was at the game. He didn't get to see me play often. I can still hear his shouts of joy over everyone else. I was trying my best to shine that day.

I also played in a football game where Phil Wise and Marlin Briscoe (UNO stars back in the day) were on our sidelines giving support. I can't tell you the lift that gave us. Neighborhood heros helping us.

Don't underestimate the power of Red... Old or new...

Wow this is a dumb argument. Instead of arguing about how alienating SOME former football players may or may not hurt recruiting/fundraising/nebraska football, why dont we actually just look at those three areas to see if they are underperforming. Lets see, back in Frank's day, we couldnt recruit anyone from outside of Lincoln seemingly, and had almost no talent on the field by the time he left. This of course, occurred when Frank allowed players on the sidelines, and every former player was supposedly on the bandwagon. Callhan on the other hand, has had several nationally regarded recruting classes, and can get kids to come to Lincoln from anywhere in the country. No players on the sidelines...... hmmmm.... that would seem to indicate to me that all of the above posts talking about how players on the sideline affect recruiting are dumb posts that obviously werent thought out, and probably reveal a deeper problem in the induvidual poster involving a deep seated need to go back to high school when they were "cool" so that they didnt have to look at the failure their lives have become as evidenced by the above posts.

This is the most intelligent post I've read in this entire, ridiculous thread. Whoever compared the history of Nebraska football to Abe Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. needs to seriously take a look at his/her priorities. Will someone start a new thread that doesn't have 95 replies? dedhoarse dedhoarse dedhoarse
