Teen-with-rifle-causes-scare-on-Scottsdale mountain
Last Update: 8/11 6:15 pm
SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Police responded to a Scottsdale mountain trail Tuesday morning after a teen dressed in fatigues was reportedly spotted carrying a rifle on the trail.
At about 6:15 a.m., a woman called police after she believed she was being followed by an armed man along the Sunrise Trail head near 145th Street and Via Linda.
Officers swarmed Scottsdale McDowell Mountain Park and later detained and arrested Maximillian Hoemke, 18. Investigators determined that the gun was an Airsoft-type gun, not a firearm, according to Officer Dave Pubins with the Scottsdale Police Department.
Pubins said Hoemke told officers he was preparing for upcoming ROTC classes.
ATTACHED SLIDESHOW
Pubins said Scottsdale PD, along with SUSD, were preparing to lockdown the nearby schools for precautionary reasons, but that was not necessary.
Still, the incident alarmed a couple of mothers who were dropping their children off at a nearby bus stop.
"It really concerns me," said concerned parent Adrian Gaughan. "You don't know who's up there and there's kids waiting for the schoool bus.
"It is a scary situation," said parent Cari Schofield.
Hoemke was booked on disorderly conduct charges.
