Magic Practiced "Surprisingly Well"

You can also tape the hell out of an ankle and play pretty much worry free.

But wasn't it just a little bit weird that Taylor was limping horribly, in obvious pain and nowhere near T-mobile, and they left him in to run two more plays?
That's what I said during the game, but then I got a flood of responses telling me that we didn't take out Eric Crouch or something.

I'm surpised by this, if he's good to go that's great but we should be conservative. We shouldn't need him to beat ISU but we will need him at full speed. in a couple weeks against ATM. ATM seems to be getting their act together since benching Jerrod.

I also had a serious ankle sprain.

When I got it it swelled up to around 1/2 a baseball in size and I was definitely not walking around on it. Was on crutches around 4 weeks. Did 2 months of rehab to get to 50%, and was back around 90% 6 months later.

To this day I still feel weakness in it when doing certain leg exercises (like lunges with weights or even running up the steps fast). Of course my rehab was nothing professional and I didn't have close to the attention that a NU football player gets. Damn ankles.

I have never sprained anything before. For those of you that have (specifically an ankle), what was the recovery time like for you and what was the pain like that first week on a scale of 1-10?

This just has me slightly worried because Gabbert got hurt against us last year (ankle) and never recovered from it during the season, and we also rely on Martinez' running a lot more than Missouri does Gabbert.
I sprained my ankle waaay back when I was in 3rd grade. We walked at least 5 miles a day on the vacation we were on when I sprained it; I had an ankle brace on, but after about 2 miles I could barely walk anymore. Recovery was about 2 weeks. My ankle was VERY swollen though, and Wats said Martinez's ankle isn't, so maybe he'll have a quicker recovery than I did.

Sprains are very individual. My buddy and I suffered similar ankle sprains years ago. His swelled up for a couple days and he couldn't walk, but then the swelling went down and he was at 90% in less than a week. But his ankle still bothers him sometimes when he runs and cuts, and he quit playing basketball because it kept giving him problems.

I had severe swelling for a couple weeks after my injury, was on crutches for 3 months, rehabbed for 6 months, and finally was able to run at full speed again after about 8-9 months with some pain. My ankle didn't feel completely right for over a year after the injury, but it's been 15 years since then and I've never had any further problems with my ankle.

Just goes to show that these things are complex and unpredictable. Of course, Martinez has the benefit of the university's sports medical people and modern sports medicine to help him.

I rolled my ankle playing ball years ago. Finished the match, couldn't walk the next day, and was basically fine the following day. It completely depends on your body, the severity of the injury, and how you treat it. Way too random to predict.

This has already been stated above, but the key is the severity. I destroyed my ankle...doing some stupid little hop thing off of the fourth stair from the ground outside of my apartment complex when I lived in California. There was a group of like six really good looking young women congregating out on the parking lot, right below my apartment and the stairs.

So I jauntily stride out of my apartment, straining with effort in my attempt to convey total coolness and general apathy...making sure to light my Parliament in what I'm sure was just the most super suave way ever, then to the stairs. On the fourth stair I jumped...and somehow managed to bend my ankle back far enough on the landing that I heard two pops. RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CUTE GIRLS. Who, God bless 'em, couldn't help but start laughing hysterically at first as I writhed around in pain. That's how you impress the ladies, guys.

Anyways, I had a pretty bad sprain. I was on crutches for 4 or 5 days, but then it got markedly better pretty quickly. I was playing basketball within 10-14 days or so and my ankle was really swollen at first, swollen enought that on first look the ER nurse said she thought I had probably broken something. Sprained ankles suck, but it just depends on the person and the type of sprain. Mine was lower ankle. High ankle sprains can be more troublesome, I think.

I thought the other day when the coaches said that there wasn't any swelling that he'd be playing this weekend. Swelling = bad, no swelling = rub some dirt on it and get back in there.

In the replay you could tell the ankle got caught a little, but it didn't get rolled up on and didn't bend in the wrong direction too bad. I have a feeling we'll see the old Magic Man out there this Saturday shredding a pitiful ISU defense.

If you tape a sore ankle up well enough, it'll hold pretty well. It's not like a knee where you need 120 degrees of movement. I've had so many ankle injuries I've lost count at this point, but when you get someone who knows what they're doing to tape it up, it makes a big difference.

he should limp during the pre-game and first couple of drives, solely handing it off or passing from the pocket. when they stop considering him as a run threat, boom, bust an 80 td run.

I honestly thought that is what they were doing in the Missouri game. I thought maybe he was playing it up a little and when the time came he was going to rip one off.

could you explain your sig? i always thought you just made it, but i see it is from an article. is it still available?

There are 3 degrees of sprained ankles. The first degree is the least harmful and full recovery timd is about 3-5 days. Not very much ligament damage and usually the most common. There is the second degree, which takes 2 weeeks-1 month to fully heal, moderate ligament damage. The third degree is the worst and you are pretty much better off breaking your ankle. About 80 percen tof the ligaments will be torn, recovery time is about 2 to 3 months. When i sprained mine, i couldnt even walk on it for a month and even after i started walking on it, it was really weak. Your whole foot gets purple/blue, the sweeling is about 3 times of a first degree and the swelling will not go down for 3 weeks. Some dcotors even confuse a 3rd degree sprain with a break when they first check out the ankle. Of course, ive sprained my ankle 6 times so ive had every degree of it.
