Two Duck recruits accused of abuse
From AP via SI:
Two football players have been charged with sexually abusing two women while on a recruiting visit to the University of Oregon this winter.
Marvin Johnson, 18, of Compton, Calif., and Major Culbert, 18, of San Pedro, Calif., were also accused of burglary in the incident that happened during the weekend of Jan. 13.
Johnson, a safety, signed a letter of intent on Feb. 1 to play at Oregon this fall. Culbert signed with Nebraska.
The arrests were first reported Wednesday on the Web site of the Register-Guard newspaper.
In a statement released late Wednesday, the Oregon athletic department said it learned of the incident in late January and stopped recruiting Culbert. The department said Johnson was offered a scholarship because it did not believe he was directly involved. The university said it learned last week that a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Johnson was arraigned Wednesday in Lane County Circuit Court and released. He agreed to appear at his next court appearance, scheduled for June 28.
"Johnson's status with the football program, as well as the university, will be dependent upon his exoneration of these charges," the statement said.
Culbert, a defensive back, was arrested in Los Angeles last week and spent four days in jail before he was released on bail, the newspaper reported.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Eugene on Tuesday.
