Lucky a Doak Walker candidate

Marlon Lucky was on a list that came out today of 43 running backs who are candidates for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top running back.

Lucky is definitely on some radar screens. In the press release, his name was one of the few mentioned in the lede-in paragraphs, alongside the likes of Ohio State's Beanie Wells and Georgia's Knowshon Moreno.

I think he's a pretty decent back, but I haven't seen too much to make me think he's great. Yet. I think he'll have better opportunities to run this season, so hopefully we'll see what he really has.

I feel the same way. I wonder if a lot of the pre-season talk about Lucky is due to the hype he received coming into NU.

Having said that, I think if things go his way he could have a very good year.

sounds like Helu is ahead of him as a sophomore at this point.

we shall see though.......
i havent gotten that vibe i guess. it sounds to me like all three backs are good enough to start a game and any one of them could play the first snap of any given game therefore being the starter for that game.

The vibe I've gotten is that Helu is the best pure runner with the best instincts. Lucky is the best all purpose back with running, blocking, and receiving. Castille is the best hammer. While I'm sure all 3 are more than adequate and would do just fine starting, there can only be one starter which is Lucky. In order for Lucky to win any post season awards, it will be up to how he is used throughout the season. If all 3 see a lot of playing time, it will be hard for Lucky to win any awards only getting in on 50% of the snaps or so.

Lucky is by far our best back in our stable. From his pass catching and route running(easily the best) to his pass blocking(also the best), remember his chip block against Wake that led to the TD right before half and may have actually been the play to win that game for us, and we have even seen glimpses of the speed and lateral quickness on some occasions(i.e, TD runs vs wake, KSU two years ago, and even his performance against Nevada).

I think a lot of us were handed out the oversized kool aid glasses by gurus and Clownahan throughout the recruiting process of this kid. Also Clownahan had a tendency to just boycott the running game whatsoever in many games. Who knew what we missed out on or what other great things Lucky(or B Jackson and Glenn for that matter) may have been able to achieve.

The expectations on this kids shoulders were unreal and unfair. He kept his nose clean and isn't a academic casualty that we have heard horror stories about from other schools. These are a few reasons I have always been a fan of Marlon and wish him nothing else but a HUGE senior season.

^ I like what you said Red Storm!

I hope Marlon stays healthy and has a great season. I hope all of our backs do.
