Rodrick Dantzler is accused of killing seven people, including two children, and wounding two other people on a crime and killing spree in Grand Rapids that lasted for hours.
It all started around 3:00 yesterday afternoon where several murder victims were found on Plainfield Avenue and Brynell Court.
Police started a man hunt for Dantzler and he eventually led them on a high speed chase. That chase ended with him taking hostages and then taking his own life.
The horrific ordeal came to an end at a home on Rick, but not before a police chase spanning the city and an intense stand-off with three hostages.
When the alert was put out for Roderick Dantzler's car calls came in from all over the city from people who had seen him. Police finally spotted him near downtown Grand Rapids and that's when the chase began.
Dantzler raced down city streets while shooting at officers along the way.
One woman was stuck by a bullet in downtown Grand Rapids but was not seriously injured.
The chase then continued onto the highways, spanning I-196, US-131 and I-96, at times going the wrong way.
After the chase on the highway Dantzler drove down an embankment and into a neighborhood.
Police say he kicked his way into a home there and that's when the hostage situation began. He held three people inside for hours, negotiating with police at times.
Police say Dantzler was agitated but he did safely let one hostage go.
He was in the process of surrendering when he turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Chief Belk told us afterward that this was a very sad day for the city, but it's situations like this that his officers train for.
In all seven people were shot and killed. Three of them were found at a home on Plainfield Avenue. The homeowner found her two adult daughters and her granddaughter murdered there.
Friends tell us the victims are Amanda, Kimberly and Marissa Emkins. We've learned that one of those women was Dantzler's ex-girlfriend.
Friends we spoke to at the scene are devastated.
“I grew up with them, I went to school with them,” said Brett Miller. “High school, college, they were great friends and they'll be well missed.”
A friend of Dantzler's tells us that this chain of events all started after he had a fight with his current girlfriend earlier in the day.
Dantzler then apparently said he "would kill them all."
The police could of just stopped Dantzler on the highway. Shoot his wheels or something, however they let him breakaway into a neighborhood only to murder others. Sad day, just random people getting murdered out of nowhere
