McKewon: Preseason guides not high on Huskers, provide lots of fiery fodder for fans

A coach of what school would care what Nebraska's administration thinks of this job?

“That job is a lot worse than it was a few years ago, and no one in the administration seems to recognize it,” said one anonymous coach to Athlon.
The smart money is on Iowa, who is still butthurt over Eichorst's explanation of Pelini's firing. "In the final analysis, I had to evaluate where Iowa was."
I agree it had to be Iowa. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it were Urban. He seems to be a pretty blunt guy.

Also Iowa is 2-0 against Nebraska since Eichorst called them out

I don't get the critique on Diaco by the anonymous coach. ND's defense wasn't good with all those "high-level" athletes before he got there and haven't been very good since he left. Put together some solid defenses at UConn with all those high-level athletes.

His high energy approach might be ineffective as a HC but as a DC it seems to work.
Great points. Look at ND before and after. Didn't UConn just have several guys drafted?

Some DC's make great head coaches and some not so much.... Disco might just be suited to being a great DC.

Comments form the players (grain of salt pre-season hype) say they love the energy. It's fun, the swagger is coming back, guys throwing the bones etc.... I really think people will be surprised with the D this year.

That's some darned good bulletin-board material from another school's AD.

It sure was, but Eichorst wasn't, and still isn't wrong.... The goal for Nebraska was never to be Iowa. Nebraska's dream season isn't finishing runner-up in the conference, and then getting hammered in the Rose Bowl. I mean, we'd probably take it right now

Well I ask a lot of folks how are thw Huskers gonna do this year? And this year the answer usually is a shoulder shrug and "I dont know", one guy said .500. SO if group average is indeed accurate the national rags are about right.

BUT I am hopeful that Diaco will put a fire under half this team that catches to the other 50%. I am hoping that Riley doesn't have any more series where everyone is scratching their heads at the play calling during crucial games. I hope that Riley continues to remember to manage the clock well unlike his first season here.

I am hoping that some coach goes to the offensive line unit with the attitude that : No we are not here to just hold our own and be a good offensive line, but rather we are going to be the best damn offensive line that College football has ever seen, 1984 BYU be damned. And that we are going to specialize in acquainting the opponents' tukas with the field turf That is the attitude you have to have

Here is the problem. It's year 3, and for the 3rd straight year nobody has any freaking clue what kind of team we are going to field.

We had to stick with Tommy. It's the right thing to do, it set us back a couple years, but I'm glad we did it.

Did we have another option? I mean, realistically?
They could've gone after a JUCO quarterback and shelved Tommy. The trouble is it wouldn't have sat very well with a lot of people. Hindsight is 20/20, but at the time, I'd argue most fans were comfortable knowing TA would be around for a few more years. Stability and what not.

Sometimes Tommy Armstrong was a miracle worker. Sometimes he.....wasn't. Because the potential was always there and every fresh season meant his decision making could have matured, it totally made sense to ride Tommy out.

Unless a crazy talented QB was being unfairly benched in Tommy's favor. That wasn't the case.

Tommy Armstrong is the career Total Offense leader in the long, rich history of Nebraska football. And we might be better off without him. That's the piece the preseason pundits might be missing.

It's a funny business.

I think it could have been just about anyone. It's not like it's just Nebraska either. When Meyer came in, it got a little harder on most of the rest. Then, we get Harbaugh at Michigan. I'd say Dantonio's job has gotten a lot more difficult at Michigan State. Of all the school's in the B1G, there are easily four who filter to the top as the most historic programs. Penn State didn't screw around when O'Brien left. They jumped on James Franklin and made him one of the highest paid coaches. Michigan didn't fiddle around either after they sacked Hoke. They had Harbaugh in their sights and they paid top dollar. Meyer makes top dollar at Ohio State. These three coaches are in the top 15 for highest paid college football coaches. Riley came in at #42.

When each of the above mentioned coaches were announced they'd been hired, there was immediate excitement from the fan bases with the exception of one. Most of their fan base had to google the name just to figure out who he was. We at Nebraska have chosen a path that's different from the other three historic programs. While we all hope that it works out, it's easy to see what the rest expect of us if it doesn't. Every time a B1G school gets a new coach by paying large sums of money, it puts more pressure on the blue blood programs mainly us.

Iowa beat us 42-10 last year, and they have won the last two. If there ever was any "butthurt," I am guessing they are over it. Let's just focus on taking another step forward this year. We haven't finished in the top 10 since 2001 - that is 16 long years.
