A hospital in England has apologized to the family of an intensive care unit patient who had maggots crawling on her face.
Nurses at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital were summoned by the daughter of Christine Ellison, who made the discovery in July, the BBC reported Monday.
Ellison's daughter said her mother kept touching her nose and fidgeting with her nasal feeding tube.
The daughter said she has since received a statement from the hospital's trust.
"We would like to offer our sincere apologies to the family of Mrs. Ellison for any distress caused by this incident," the letter said. "We can confirm that a very small number of maggots, each the size of a pin-head, were found. The incident was incredibly rare and we took immediate steps to prevent it from happening again."
Ellison died two days after the larvae were discovered, although the family is satisfied the maggot incident had no influence on her death, the report said.
