If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on VA Tech!! Getting 3 points and in Blacksburg almost makes it a lock!! Sure, Miami's offense has looked good, but only because the teams they have played have had, at best, mediocre defense. Florida State looked lost in week 1, though after BYU they may have turned it around, and did anybody watch the GA-Tech game? Not only was their "D" winded the entire game but they tackled horribly and were constantly out of position. It almost looked like Cosgrove might be calling the plays.
That being said, I would hardly call VA Tech's "D" mediocre and as much as they harassed Lee, at least Helu was somewhat successful and helped alleviate some of the pressure. Miami's running game is hardly spectacular and it's guaranteed Harris will be under at least some pressure.
While Harris' yardage and completion percentage look great, I'd hardly say that completing screens and short crossing routes for big gains qualifies him as a top 10 QB. That's like saying Phillip Rivers is a badass because he tosses a 3 yard screen to Sproles, who then springs it for 85 yards. It’s just not true. Seriously, Harrison Beck would be great if that's all that is required to be a top 10 QB. I'd say the credit belongs to the receiver and the blockers, not the QB. Then again, maybe he is really that good just as some would have you believe about Rivers, but saying top 10 based upon the first couple of games performance I'd say is a slightly premature assumption. We'll see though!!
And as far as Miami’s “D,” yeah they look decent and fast, but I think VA Tech is a little bit more balanced then the two teams they have previously played. The Hokies might not be the best throwing team, but they will run and can throw when they have to, just as we found out. Between Miami’s first two opponents, FSU was a little pass happy, throwing the ball about 40 times, and Georgia Tech was exactly the opposite. Being one-dimensional plays right into Miami’s speed, allowing them to pin back their ears and fly to the ball. Not exactly a recipe for offensive success if you’re looking to put up some points.
Overall, it should be a great game, fairly low scoring and eerily similar to how the Husker game played out. I’ll take the points and the under except that this time my money’s on VA Tech.
