Midseason Ranking of the B1G 10

NUance

Assistant Coach
Wow, what a mess. All this time I thought the Badgers were the best team, hands down. I thought Wisc losing to Mich State was a fluke. Now tOSU squeaks by them too, so I guess it's a trend. I still think the Badgers are the best B1G 10 team when playing at home. Camp Randall is brutal. But could they come into Memorial and beat us? I doubt it. Could we beat tOSU or Sparty in their houses? I dunno, maybe--we'll never know. But we find out in a couple weeks whether we can take Joe Pa at Happy Valley. To be honest, I'm more concerned about the Vulvarines in the Big House. Right now I'd say we're looking about as good as anyone in this crazy conference race.

Until some team emerges in November, I'd say the B1G race is too close to call just yet. But that's never stopped me before, so here goes my attempt at a 2011 midseason ranking:

1) Huskers: we beat two teams that beat Wisc. Maybe that overcomes the Camp Randall beatdown. Maybe.

2) Wisconsin: That just went 0-2 in the last two weeks

3) Michigan St: We exposed them in Memorial yesterday.

4) Ohio State: Just now emerging from the haze of scandals

5) Michigan: I'm not convinced yet. How can a guy play without his shoelaces tied?

6) Penn State: Nice record. Just don't spoil it by playing someone.

7) Illinois: Most erratic team in the conference. Maybe the nation.

8) Iowa: Ha ha!

9) Northwestern: More dangerous than advertised. If Persa is on.

10) Purdue: See above. Except with no Persa.

11) Indiana: Basketball school that also plays football.

12) Minnestota: Jerry Kill has his hands full trying to put lipstick on *this* pig.

Good review but ^this^ is arguable

No it's not. They really do play football.

I'd switch Huskers and Badgers and Indiana and Minnesota in nuance's rankings.

How would you rank the B1G right now? Curious what some of the posters from other teams think.

Not a big fan of rankings...in my mind you're better off going with tiers,

TIER ONE) Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State

TIER TWO) Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan

TIER THREE) Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois

TIER FOUR) Minnesota, Indiana

Teams from the same tier can beat one another and a team might lose on the road to a team in a tier one lower than them but a match up two tiers down or two tiers up isn't going to be as much of a contest. Just kind of how I see it, you can poke holes in it and I'm sure it has flaws but I've always had a problem with rankings in general. Often you can name a few teams that are clearly better than the bad teams but what separates a 6 team from a 7 team or an 11 team from a 12 team? I don't know and I've never found satisfactory answers, that's why I prefer tiers.

I like your rankings, but to play DA: So, MSU @ Iowa won't be much of a contest?

Damn, good point. Like I said, there are holes.

Standings as of October 30th, 2011

1. Nebraska - We have the best rushing attack in the conference and our defense may have finally turned the corner. Best Win = vs #11 Michigan State (24-3)

2. Wisconsin - It's taken back-to-back miracles on the road to knock off the Badgers. Still the most physically gifted team in the conference even with two losses. Best Win = vs #8 Nebraska (48-17)

3. Michigan State - Physical defense and a leader in Cousins at QB. Not a very talented road team, but their track record at home is unmatched so far this season. Best Win = vs #6 Wisconsin (37-31)

4. Ohio State - Braxton Miller is still developing, but one thing's for sure, he will be a major pain for the next three years. Quite possibly the best defense in the conference as well. Best Win = vs #15 Wisconsin (33-29)

5. Penn State - Great defense. That's about it. The Nittany Lion offense has been abysmal this season, but to their credit, their only loss came to the #2 Crimson Tide by only 16 points. Best Win = vs Illinois (10-7)

6. Michigan - The Wolverines haven't beaten a team with any sort of credibility. The toughest opponent they've played this year was Sparty, who has had their number the last few years. Best Win = vs Notre Dame (35-31)

7. Illinois - Good offensive team when their on, but have struggled the last couple games losing to Purdue and Penn State. Talented bunch, but is too inconsistent to win championships. Best Win = vs #22 Arizona State (17-14)

8. Purdue - Beat Illinois.

9. Iowa - Lost to Minnesota.

10. Northwestern - Dan Persa.

11. Minnesota - Beat Iowa.

12. Indiana - Beat no one.

I think you're close with your tiers. On neutral fields that's probably close to where things would shake out is my guess & it would be a coin flip with the same tier teams playing each other.

I still think Wisconsin is the best team in the Big10 as Wilson is simply awesome but obviously they're not invincible on the road. At Camp Randle though, especially at night.....whew! Their defense isn't looking very good but they're almost impossible to stop offensively.

I think it'll come down to NU/Wisconsin rematch in the ccg. We're just starting our gauntlet ("after" already playing the Cheeseheads & Buckeyes,,,,heh, thanks a lot Big10) and we'll see if we can hack it. It looks like we have a good chance with our defense "finally" coming around and offense getting better each week. It won't hurt not seeing the Buckeye or Spartan vicious defenses anymore.

Damn, I just love the Big10!!

GBR!!
