COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, who's replacing several skill players on offense, said the defense had the upper hand in a scrimmage on Thursday.

The Tigers, rebuilding after the departures of Jeremy Maclin, Chase Daniel and Chase Coffman, were "sloppy" overall. Missouri, coming off consecutive 10-win seasons, opens Sept. 5 against Illinois in St. Louis, and the coach said there were too many penalties and sacks.

The Tigers have one more scrimmage next Thursday.

Sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert was 14 of 21 for 121 yards and a touchdown, with an 11-yard scoring pass to Danario Alexander. Together, three kickers were 15 for 24 but only 1 for 6 from the 40 and beyond.

They had a different O-line with new people and new positions due to a minor injury (knee sprain) to Dan Hoch.

Ah... what a difference a day makes:

The offense dominated an inside running drill, just blowing the D-linemen off the ball on most occasions. ...
Over to 11-on-11 drills, Gabbert marched the offense right down the field and capped the drive with a short TD pass to Alexander.

How many times do they scrimmage throughout fall camp?

Oh, by the way, if Mizzou's 'defense' has the upper hand on the offense, that bodes well.

Coaches do lots of things to motivate the troops. I think MU will do OK this year, but it will be a little off from losing so much.
