Mizzou Thoughts

Kudos to the Big Red for a gutty first half comeback. This game showed that the talent gap still exists, but we are getting pretty good mileage out of these kids at 5-2. The key will be to beat the hillbillys next week.

The bottom line is that we still need better offensive tackles, a gamebreaking running back (Lucky next year?!), a legitimate tight end, 4-5 tall receivers, big time linebackers who can fly and an enforcer at safety. Callahan has good chemistry, we just need a bit more time to get the talent.

Good post. It's about time I saw some sort of optimism from the loss today.

When they showed that the receivers for Mizzou were 6'7" I was like, OH NO!

Brad Smith is a weapon in himself. Defending those tall receivers and containing the threat in Smith was a very tall order for the Blackshirts today.

Had the fumble not occured on the 5 yard line, I think the game momentum would have swing in NU's favor for the remainder of the game.

Everyone ramps it up a bit more for the Huskers. Many teams season are judged on whether or not they beat Nebraska.

NU has OU next week. I am sure the Huskers will be ready to show the fans that this season will not be a fluke. :thumbs

Plain and simple, this game exposed us as pretenders. Our O-line is below average, we still lack athleticism out of our linebackers, and most of all:

Our coaching staff still has a ways to go. Callahan's aversion to running the ball today was pathetic. Pathetic.

Further, Cos sure has problems scheming for good offenses. 42 first quarter pionts against Mizzou and Tech? That tells me Cos doesn't game plan very well.

I was fooled by the Tech and Baylor games into thinking this team was close.

Not today. We got exposed.

:yeah

Our LB core has diminished with injuries. Coz seems too content hanging back and preventing the big play, even on third and long. We gave MU too many 3rd and long conversions today let alone the big plays. I don't think he is bringing the right pressure at the right time.

We need more variety in play calling on O. On one series we ran on first down and ross picked up a couple. The next play it looked like we ran the same play and were thrown for a loss. That put us in 3rd and long situations.

Alright, it's taken me a few hours to calm down but I think i'm ok now.

Offense: Some of the absolute worst play out of our tackles as i've ever seen. These guys would not have been able to walk on to the 95 team. Taylor was lucky to be able to find his second reciever before he was getting hit. He made some great throws and I think he played exceptional considering the protection. Ross made some nice moves but he was taken out of the game when we fell behind. What is so hard about catching the football?? If it hits you in the chest there is absolutely no excuse. Colorado had the same problem last yeat. What is Gilmore teaching these guys? We still need to remember that this team is still "rebuilding" and we don't have all of the right players to run this offense effectively yet. Sometimes I think we all forget this.

Defense: Once again Coz made some good adjustments, but also once again we were down by a few touchdowns when he did it. We can't expect to win games by spotting the opponent 21 points early. I think our secondary played a decent game overall. The main problem with our D in this one is that they had to go up against Brad Smith. There is good news however... We don't have to deal with another QB with his talents for the rest of our regular season. I think our defense will be fine in the rest of our games.

We all need to stay positive and remember.. 5-2 is not a bad record considering the season we had last year.

:yeah

I think too many NU fans had very high expectations which were not justified based on the weak schedule and the fact than NU HAS NOT DOMINATED ANY TEAM THIS YEAR! We are improving, but not yet a great or highly consistant team.

The MU defeat is disappointing, but lets admit we happened to run into Brad Smith when he had one of his best days ever. The guy is sometimes inconsistent but also a super talent. When he's hot, HE IS HOT!

Here's an optomistic thought... OU, KU, KSU, and CU don't have anyone remotely close to Brad Smith as far as a run-pass threat. I don't think our defense will look that bad again this season. If we can fix our O-line problems we can still win the rest of our games. Colorado may be good but Klatt isn't going to run for 200 yds.
