Free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker has been offered a short-term deal by the Mets that is believed to be worth $50 million per season, sources told ESPN.
Eh .... I'm about as underwhelmed as you can be for signing one of the biggest free agent targets of the cycle.
I don't see how all this works together. The Mets have a ton of infielders and are in dire need of at least one outfielder. So signing an infielder seems odd. And the positions we are most set at for a long time are shortstop and right field. So we sign a shortstop so we can move him to third base, which is the position were we have the most options already on the roster.
Baty looked like he finally took hold of the third base spot last year and shows promise and versatility. Vientos seems to have the most upside with his bat but struggled last year. And Mauricio has looked promising as well. This almost assures that Vientos gets moved to first base, which isn't' bad because he's not a good defensive third baseman. But then why did we sign Polonco to play first base? And why did we make all the noise about needing to be better on defense - and imply that was one reason Alonso wasn't deserving of a bigger contract - and then decide to play guys at first base who have basically never played first base before?
I would think this pretty much assures that (at least) one of those three will get traded. And then we just have to hope that we don't trade the one that ends up being a star and keep one who busts. So if they can turn this into a trade for a front-line starter or a quality left fielder, I suppose it will work out.
But it just feels like we thought we were getting Tucker - and don't want Bellinger at his asking price - so when Tucker signed with the Dodgers we just threw that money at the next biggest name we could get because we felt we had to do *something*. All the hallmarks of a panic move.
