My son is playin football!

Here's a question for you guys. My son is 5'4" and weighs a whopping 111 pounds. He wants to play wide receiver. I told him the first time he runs a crossing route and gets hit by the CB or the safety, he may re-think that decision but he doesn't care. So...I'd like him to put on a few more pounds. He eats like there's no tomorrow (I think he would eat tomorrows food today if he could) but he's still skinny. I'm thinking about getting him some protein shake stuff and having him drink it once a day to hopefully 1) help his muscles recover and 2) put a little meat on his bones. Safe? Not safe? Any particular brand?
There's nothing wrong with a protein shake, but watch the "weight gainers." Those aren't good.
Thanks for the info. The shake I used to drink was designed for lean muscle (very little fat within in the ingredients) so I may look at getting some of that for him
Yeah, the "Syntha-6" type stuff would be ok.

Have him try plain yogurt mixed with strawberry or chocolate 100% whey protein power. He can mix them together and make it into flavored yogurt, or he can throw in some ice and fruit and make a smoothy. I like EAS Chocolate and Gold Standard Strawberry (their vanilla is good too) 100% protein and have had good results. Regardless, as long as he's not lactose intolerant, lots of yogurt and cottage cheese will do him wonders. I've never heard anything about protein being unsafe for a teenager. But...

I'm no expert in these things, so this is only my two cents, but I seem to remember that kids under a certain developmental stage should avoid weight lifting. I'm sure there are completely varied opinions on this matter. What I remember reading is that before the a certain developmental point (depends on the kid), there is so much bone growth going on, that the type of muscles gained through strength conditioning can stunt/restrict bone growth. A rule of thumb was 16 years of age. Also remember reading that normal physical conditioning through running, aerobics, calisthenics, etc. did not adversely effect growth like the weights did.

I am no expert. But this worked for me...

They had me eating lots when trying to put on weight. Big breakfast, 2-3 school lunches, footlong or a big burger after school, dinner and more dinner before bed. I swear i was eating 6000+ calories a day, probably more. It worked because of how active i was with wieghts and cardio + practice. I was able to add mass but not a ton of fat. I went from a 6'2", 155 lb freshman to a 6'3", 195 lb senior and still had very little body fat. I was just feeding my muscles. However the problem for me came when i was done with HS and a few years of college. As I stopped being as active I still kept those eating habits.....not so good. LOL

I think adding Whey protien to his diet wont do any harm, but you need to increase his fat intake too. As little as he is he is probably burning energy by just sitting at the table. The extra fat and calories with feed his body and growth. The protien will repair his muscles and can help with some bulk. I would just be careful about how you change his diet. After 4 years of constant intake its hard to turn off.

But as you know HFIOL...every kid is different. He might just be a rail. :) best of luck to him and keep us up to date on his progess through the season.

Thanks fro! I know when I was a freshman I was a skinny kid. Hell when I left for Basic Training I weighed a whopping 148lbs and could eat anything. Now, if I sneeze at a Krispy Kreme, I gain 5lbs. I'm gonna get him some stuff this weekend and see how he likes it.

His practice today was their first in pads. A little sore but I could tell when I picked him up he was excited about hitting and getting hit. His friend asked him how he felt after getting leveled so I took that as meaning he got laid out, LOL!

"Dat fooze-ball is for the devil!"

It's going good. He understands he's behind the power curve with other players who have playing experience but he also realizes the harder he tries, the better his chances of seeing some actual playing time. :koolaid2:

That's great that he is hanging with it. If he's made it this far, he has the hardest parts behind him! Does his school have a JV or Freshmen team that he could compete for some real PT on?

Ohh, and peanut butter and banana sandwhiches are the way to go to put on some weight.

He's on the Freshman team right now. Next year as a Soph he can move up to the JV/Varsity.

This website should explain everything in detail, just avoid being drawn into all of the supplements. A good creatine and protein schedule worked very well for me. I also didn't miss a workout for 2 years. A few of these guys will say "No the creatine is dangerous" there are no extensive studies done on it and I personally benefited from it. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/index.html

Also, go get his offseason workout schedule, right now he just needs to be going to practice and learning the calls- and as a dad make sure you tell him to stand up the entire practice and stay by the coach- I was at least 3rd string until my Senior year but IDK how many first string reps I got because I was on the coaches hip when someone needed to be rushed in. I wasn't a blessed athlete but I stayed in the system- believed in the weights program presented to me- and by the time I was an 18 year old Senior, I lead the team in sacks @ the DE position. The coaches will see his hard work in the weight room and at practice and if they have anything in them they will find a position for any kid that does that, or perhaps my coach was just that good of a guy.

Son had his first game tonight! They won 28-8. The 7th and 8th grade teams served up shut-outs. He didn't play the 1st half but played most of the 2nd half. He had one helluva tackle as well. Soon as the receiver touched it, he wrapped him up tightly and took him down immediately. It was awesome! He also got leveled a couple of times as well, one on a kick return :laughpound He said he was nervous but I don't think he's nervous anymore. Still has some work to do (blocking mainly) but he's getting there. All in all, it was a blast getting to watch him and the rest of the kids! :w00t
