Nebraska VS. USC

This is the type of big game game I have been waiting for since coach Callahan took over this program. There were a couple of big games last year but I didn't think we would be in as good of a position to win as this year. Is this the break out year we have been waiting for? I know that a lot of us have been pointing to this year. I don't know if it's fair to expect our players to have the great year we are waiting for or not. H.Beck was supposed to be leading this team and Lucky was going to be a Heisman candidate all of Callahan's recruits would be in position now. Now we start a new q/b and running backs by committee and a new d/line.

After saying all that, I think we win this game and the program starts to build it's self back up into a BCS team for years to come again.

I can see this game going down to the last couple of minutes where we need to make an important play without fumbling the ball away. I think of the Texas and Texas Tech games. Like those two games, I see it coming down to the end to one play that will make us or break us.

I'm going to be completely honest, we will have to bring our A+ game (our A or A- game won't do).

From top to bottom, this USC team is just complete stacked.

The thing that scares me most -- our defensive line played outstanding last year, while our defensive backs struggled. This year, the script should be flipped with USC's line being back and our defensive line being inexperienced.

We will need that fire in our belly from all 22 players to get it done.

Agreed it will take an A+ effort to win this one. USC returns 18 starters.

1620 just mentioned that USC has 10 former high school All America running backs on their roster. Talk about a log jam with the rich being too rich. But hey we got Lucky from them!!

I think Callihan plays it close to the Vest so as not to reveal too much of the playbook to Ball State or even the rest of our Conference opponents.

 
Well they have the beach, women, hollywood, women, weather, women, film industry, women, skiing, women, beach volley ball, women, mountains, women and did I mention women, and of course the song girls. Not to mention being in the top five for the last few years.

 
there is probably no more talent laden team in college football than these guys. we will have a very tough time with them again this year.

talent wise we just won't match up with these guys, as will few other teams they play.

I totally agree. I love the Huskers and always think they can win, or at least since BC has taken over. But no matter how we talk about the great recruiting job BC has done, it pales in comparison to SC. They have the ability to be the next real dynasty of college football, if they aren't already.

Just too much going for them for them to fall, weather, history, in state population, hell in town population dwarfs most programs, tradition, media, talent and a great coaching staff.

Saying these things, some may think doom and gloom, but I look at coal and call it coal, not the start of a diamond. We have a long long long ways to go to be on the same talent level of SC. I truly doubt we ever will be as long as Carrol is there. But if we can give them a good game, play to win and end up in a BCS game this year, I think this staff has done a fantastic job.

If we keep losing players even before fall practice who knows. We can not afford to lose key players, SC just lines up two or three more 5 star athletes to take their place. That is the glaring difference, the depth and the quality of their depth. As stated before we just don't know the names of their poison yet. But come the 15th of September we will. I hope BC figures out the antedote for it.

No offense, but I'm sick and tired of hearing how the Univ of South Central is going to win the national championship every year for the next 20 years. If weather alone were a factor, than we would never have 5 of them. UCLA is a few miles across town and they seem like they can never get it together, the temp is the same in westwood as in south central. In addition to weather and beaches, LA also has gridlocked traffic, smog so thick you can cut it with a knife, crime, high cost of living...not to mention the possibility of getting shot just a few blocks from campus as it's in such a great neighborhood. Potential recruits probably don't consider those things as much, but they do take away from their college experience, which I'm sure Pete Carroll conveniently doesn't mention. I'm so glad I'll be leaving this place in a month!

Pete Carroll was a mediocre coach at best when he was in the NFL, no better than BC IMO. While we were at our best in the 90's, South Central was also mediocre at best. Either of our 94 or 95 teams would beat up their 03 or 04 teams. Let's face it, we have just as much tradition and success as their program, which is even more special since we don't have the weather or beaches or an overcrowded population to recruit from. Trust me, their program will not continue forever, with or without Pete Carroll. It's all cyclical, just look at us or Miami or Florida St.

BC started with bare cupboard and has done a good job of restocking it with talent. I appreciate you being a realist, but start promoting your own team instead of South Central.

I hate to say it, but I think USC takes this one. They've got such an amazing defense and so much depth that an injury won't hurt them too badly. I think having a fresh face at quarterback (even if it is Keller, who has played against USC before) will be a disadvantage.

 
The weathere is a recruiting advantage, nothing to do with playing the game. And yes we have tradition, but in fact pales to SC. Way more Hypsmans and NC's.

All the reasons that Tom did not want the Big 12 ended Nebraska's run. Those gimme's are gone.

I love Nebraska, give quite a bit every year for the program and have for over 25 years. I support our program, but I see the whole picture, not just the Husker side, as I am not only a Nebraska fan but a fan of all college football.

BC has done wonders with the talent level. I am one of his biggest fans and have been since day one. We had to change our recruiting, but selling Ice to Eskimos is a lot harder than Margaritas in Los Angeles.

I did not say SC would win the NC. You never know, anyone can. But for recruiting they have a great job, along with Florida State, Miami and Florida. Texas has the population and the High School Football programs. Ohio State and Michigan have major Big 10 loyalty, top athletes from that area very seldom leave. Of the major players Oklahoma is the closest to us. I honestly see them falling back in talent in the next couple of years.

All have a population base that draw the local talent in droves to their doors. We do not have the luxury. Our staff has to work much harder to even stay close. Pete Carrol made the statement he never leaves the state to recruit, unless it is a very very special talent. He has more than he can take.

But BC is making headway, but some fans seem to think we are on even base with the top programs. Talent wise we are closing the gap, but we are not close to the big boys of current college football. If we win certain games this year, it will be because of his coaching, not his higher level of athletic talent.
