Fred Hoiberg emerged from behind the black curtain hanging over the tunnel, his white Yeezy shoes cutting through smoke cascading from the stage made for Rick Ross.

Before becoming the second men’s basketball coach to take a seat on a Husker bench inside Pinnacle Bank Arena,

Hoiberg paused.

He watched Jervay Green take a pass from Derrick Walker in warmups and windmill it home. Freshman Yvan Ouedrogo shook the backboard on the other end, the shot clock hanging on for dear life. “Swag Surfin” played on the loudspeaker. The smoke from the top of the arena fell down, the haze hanging over the 10,000 fans clad in red.

Hoiberg put his hands on his hips. He sighed, with a small smile.

This is what it looks like when Nebraska decides to care about basketball.
