Need help with satellite options

Hey guys. Here's the scenario:

My mom's had DirecTV for a few years with a standard dvr and a standard receiver (no HDTV). I'm moving back in to her place for the time being with my 46" LCD and I want some HD service. I can get a free HD DVR updgrade from DirecTV and hopefully haggle with them on free HD service (otherwise it's $10/mo), but I have to renew our contract for 2 years and I'm not sure mom will be okay with that. I think she just has the base package from them. I looked at DISH's website, and while they have free HD for life, their two lower tier packages didn't impress me much and the price after 12 months seemed pretty expensive (I think we need a two year contract with them also?), so I'm weighing my options and looking for some input. Thanks :)

I have directv and am obviously partial, but I have always had excellent customer service. I would try to get the HD for free so it might offset the difference with the contract. I do know that they charge like $400 to break the contract early. I guess it depends if she is planning on keeping the service for at least 2 years or not. I hate how they rope you into this crap like cell phone companies do.

I agree with Chucktown. My wife and I had Dish for several years and never liked it much. It seemed everytime a slight breeze came thru (and living in Oklahoma, it's ALWAYS windy), we'd lose our signal. The breaking point came when we asked about getting a HD/DVR. We expected we would have to sign another 2 year contract, but we we're expecting to have to pay $300 for the receiver. <_< My wife promplty called Direct and they set us up with the HD/DVR. Funny thing is, when my wife called to cancel Dish, they all of a sudden had a change of heart and told her that since we'd been such great customers we qualified for the FREE HD/DVR. My wife said "Nope! Direct TV is here now installing their stuff, come get your sh#t!"

Long story short, Direct TV in my experience has been better than Dish.
