It's certainly possible, but Butler may have simply emerged as the best fit.  3-3-5 coaches are unique in the way a lot of offensive system coaches are.  If Rhule is truly married to the philosophy of a "multiple 3-3-5", I would be surprised to see them lining up to adapt their scheme to accommodate this desire.

Perhaps, but he's an assistant to the position coach, and doesn't have the playing experience to fall back on.  The Bucs had a female assistant D-Line coach for several seasons, I would be a little skeptical if they were hiring her to.

He has 5 years of D-Line coaching in the NFL for a team with 3 Super Bowls.   If the Chiefs didn’t value him as an assistant line coach, they wouldn’t have kept him around.   
 

Him and McGuire are not comparable 

 
Poked in on a couple Penn State boards to see what they were saying about Butler. The responses were "lol," "good luck with that," and "Rhule won't make it past year three."

This was the same sentiment South Carolina fans had toward Satterfield before we hired him.  Unless Butler is one of the best recruiters in the country, I have no idea what Rhule sees in him. He has 1 year of experience as a DC for Penn State and they finished 60th in total defense, giving up over 26 points a game.  In 2012 Penn State finished 16th in total defense and in 2014 they finished 7th in total defense, but the year Butler led the group they finished 60th.  

Meanwhile Jim Leonhard led the Wisconsin defense from 2017 to 2022 which had two top 5 finished in total defense and consistently was in the top 20.  I simply do not understand Rhule's hiring decisions.

So you have to had played a position in order to be able to coach it?

Maybe Rhule approached Leonhard and was turned down? Was Rhule supposed to put a gun in his back and force him to go to Lincoln?

Rhule has the largest budget ever for assistants of any Nebraska head coach in history.   There are plenty of experienced defensive coordinators out there, and he even indicated he was getting significant interest from other P5 programs.  So why go with Butler who has 1 season as a DC and it was one of the worst defensive seasons in recent Penn State history.  It feels like a safe and lazy pick.  

The OC and DC picks are the most important picks for any head coach. It sets the tone for the entire offense and defense and these are LEADERSHIP positions. Coordinators need to not only understand schemes and play calling, they also must understand hiring and personnel and how to think strategically.  Not all positions coaches are cut out to be coordinators, just like all coordinators are not cut out to be head coaches.

Not to mention that the chiefs have stealthily built one of the best d lines in football since they got smoked by Tampa in the Super Bowl a few years ago largely due to mahomes getting harassed nonstop. I like the hire
