New Staff Selection

No kidding. Every other job in America has a job title and that person is responsible for doing their job description, so the boss doesn't have to. If it doesn't work the boss needs to make changes. The boss is making changes. At no point was anyone put in a position to fail by Frost. He was put in a position to succeed and didn't!

Putting someone who doesn’t have the tools to do the job in that spot is a failure on the boss. Dawson is a DL/OLB coach. Not a dedicated special teams guy. He had some experience in assisting before. Not leading the whole unit. That’s on Frost. This is also the fourth year in a row special teams has been horrible no matter who is in charge of the unit. That’s on the HC. 
 

Edit: I realize now that Dawson has experience from BC coordinator special teams

That’s not even true, he was a special teams coach for three years at Boston College.

Didn’t know that. I thought his experience was from the NFL. I’ll keep it up as I’m not too proud to admit I was wrong. 
 

Dawson is still a much better defensive coach than special teams. Glad he is no longer coaching special teams. However,  something is sour when it comes to that part of the game. That is in my opinion still on Frost for four years of continuous failure after multiple coaches.

It is on Frost.  The overall staff needs to understand and preach the importance of special teams and that clearly doesn't happen. He has half heartedly attempted to fix it, including putting Dawson in two positions. 

We need a dedicated person, period. 4 years of 109+ ranked ST has proven that. He must at least try.

It is on SF. He must implement ST into practice and not just a side note. He must put as much emphasis on every aspect of ST as he does offense and defense. This is tough as a coach when you are constantly trying to get offense and defense ready. He has to put guy in place who will work with specialist everyday, rather than juggling dline or linebacker and specialist.

I agree that at this point, we've dug a deep enough ST hole that a dedicated person is the right route. But having a split position coach/special teams coordinator isn't half-hearted. 

Picking the top 5 P5 teams by special teams rating here, 2 have TE/ST coahces. One has OLB/ST. One (Iowa) has a dedicated special teams coach. And one (A&M) only has an analyst as far as I can tell, no official coach role. Again, I'm on board with a full time ST guy because the issues are clearly deep. But once ST is up and running, it's just not true that it requires a full time coach to be great.

I fully agree with you it shouldn't require a full time guy to do well,  but as you agreed with me earlier in the post,  it does here at the present moment.  Every coach can help with ST and it just doesn't seem to be that level of priority under Frost to date.

I imagine this role could have similar benefits in the college ranks.  Before everyone tears into Darren Rizzi's record or credentials, consider the points he's making:

1. They have to know, and spend time with the entire team - you would think this would he the role of HC but think of all the booster meetings, staff meetings, recruiting, and other stuff that calls on Frost's plate.

2. They have to be specialists in situational football, clock management, and executing under pressure - something we're obviously missing.

3. They actually scheme special teams scenarios against our opponents - think Michigan State...again it's obvious.

I think a good ST coordinator can not only fix our obvious ST issues, but will also give a depth to player and roster management that we're currently lacking.  As good of a coach as I think Tuoiti is, I still think this program grows by the hiring of a full time special teams coordinator.

Got it - I guess my point is still I don't think Dawson was set up to fail by holding two positions. With how bad we've been it's not putting him in a great position to all of a sudden turn us into a top-25 special teams unit - at this point that's what I believe would require full time dedication. But I don't think moderate improvement from previous years is too much to ask, and he didn't get that done.

I honestly don't blame the place kicking on anyone either, kickers are head cases and you don't mess with them. But our coverage units got worse throughout the year and punt/kick protection wasn't good - those should not be difficult to bring up to a decent level. 

 
Has there been any rumors about a potential running backs coach? I feel with Tuioti leaving Dawson could naturally move to Defensive line and sounds like Busch will be the Special teams Coordinator once his contract with LSU is done being paid out in January. I know Ron Brown is on staff as an analyst or director of player development or whatever and I think he is a good option but are their any other coaches out their that could add in the recruiting wrinkle in to the fold?

Speculation is Brown is not gonna be your RB coach but Busch is likely your special teams guy. Kinda fits the role now.
