Next Year's Secondary??

Three-Star Recruit
Hi I am a long time reader but finally decided to start posting to the board  My question that I have been worrying about is next year’s secondary….what is it going to look like next year with the loss of Prince, Hagg, Gomes, Ricky, and possibly Dennard? I love how our secondary is able to lock down anybody in the country. I know Sanders is very good and will have them ready next year but who is the most likely to start and are they as capable to lock down as our current secondary?? Your thoughts…

We definately will take a big hit in the secondary. But I think we have capable guys back there. Some of the younger guys have been getting valuable experience already. (Osborne, Evans, PJ Smith namely and Cooper has the physical ability to be a badass) We will see a step back in the secondary next year, no doubt about it. But our Dline will be hella experienced along with our LB core which hopefully will be able to make up for some of the drop off.

Make no mistake defense is back at Nebraska and it isnt going anywhere for a long while. We are already to the reloading phase on the defensive side of the ball. The offense isnt far behind with the kind of O-line talent we are bringing in. It all starts up front and the rest just falls into place. I think we are in for another good decade.

edit: BTW welcome to the board.

Welcome to the board Mosskid84!!!!

Here are my thoughts with our 2011 secondary. It'll be a rebuilding year but we have some solid players playing under our current starters that have seen significant playing time. I think Dennard will stay for his senior year and PJ Smith will be back come next year. Austin Cassidy, Lance Thornell, Antonio Bell and Courtney Osborne have seen some playing time this year. Corey Cooper, Ciante Evans, Harvey Jackson, Andrew Green, Dijon Washington, Anthony West will be competing for a starting role. I have a feeling that Justin Blatchford will be in the mix and he has shine on special teams.

Will our secondary be as good as this years unit come the 2011 season? Probably not but it'll still have some solid players returning that have some game experience under their belts. Going into the 2011 season our front 4 and LB's will be our strongest part of our defense.

EDIT: Scratch that Anthony West is a senior this year

I know this is more for the recruiting board but is there anybody that Nebraska is recruiting CB wise that could possibly come in and start??? I agree that Nebraska will be ok secondary wise as long as Sanders is teaching them I always liked his as a coach hopefully we can keep him and this staff together for A LONG time! :throwdabones1:

Out of all DB's from the 2010 recruits I'm gonna say Corey Cooper. If Daimion Stafford stays committed to Nebraska and signs his LOI in February I think he'll have a huge impact on our secondary since he's coming from a Juco school but you never know....so far its working out for David.

We have the Pelini brothers my wonderful corn family, we don't have much to worry about.

I see Dennard staying, throw in Cassidy, Green, PJ Smith, Corey Cooper, and Ciante Evans and we should be fine. The LB's will bet better next year, so that will take some pressure off the secondary.

Will Cassidy be our peso back next year?
Either him or Andrew Green.

Here is how I see it breaking down next year:

Saftey- Smith, Cooper, and Stafford could play here.

CB-Green, Evans, Jackson, Mitchell, Middleton, Stafford, Dennard, Tevin Mitchell, C. Jackson; We have a lot of guys there. Someone will emerge.

Peso- Green (if he doesn't switch back to CB), Cassidy, and Stafford could also play here.

The secondary is the last place that I am worried about on defense. Bo Pelini's specialty is the secondary. I have literally no concerns on that.

Our DL will also be very sound as well.

And that will be incredibly important heading into the physical trenches of the Big Ten.

If you’re looking at next years DBs you gotta consider our D-line. We lose Pierre Allen. But we got back Crick, Stein, Moore, and Camstache. Plus Josh Williams and Ankrah. We’ll prolly be better at D-line. Which will make our DBs look better.
