No raises for UT Assistant Coaches

Mack gets a bump to $5M and his boys get nothing

The Texas assistant football coaches won't receive raises until possibly September, but they still will be given bonuses for helping direct the Longhorns to the national championship game.

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said the decision for the coaches not to receive bumps in their base salaries was based on the economic downturn affecting the university.

Typically, Dodds and coach Mack Brown meet to discuss raises for the assistants in January, following the end of the football season.

But the university is in a belt-tightening mode. A week ago, Gov. Rick Perry ordered the school to submit a plan on how to cut 5 percent of its budget funded by state money.

At this time last year, all assistants but coordinators Greg Davis and Will Muschamp — who are the highest paid on Brown's staff — received salary bumps of 3 to 4 percent. Muschamp's salary was nearly doubled when he was promoted to head-coach designate, while Davis received an increase of 9 percent.

However, all the assistants will be paid performance-based bonuses, as called for by their contracts.

Playing in a Bowl Championship Series game will garner an assistant a one-time payment of 9 percent of his salary. The assistants also received a bonus between $3,000 and $5,000 for winning the Big 12 Conference title.

In December, the UT System Board of Regents amended Brown's contract to allow for what had been a one-time $2 million retention bonus to be paid annually.

Brown, at $5 million, is the highest-paid football coach in the country.

Agreed but when you read this (was posted in the Big 12 Blog on ESPN) you have to wonder if the Assistants won't get a little pissed off:

Texas football is the most profitable college sports entity in the nation. Forbes Magazine ranked the Longhornfootball program last month as No. 1 among all college sports properties with a team value of $119 million and a profit in 2008 of $59 million.

I still can't believe Mack's the highest paid coach in college football.....Wow

Well when you think about the amount of revenue he has brought in for the University and the success he has had the last decade, it's fairly deserving.

Texas football was important before Mack Brown got there, but after he got there the attendance numbers shot up and revenue for the University want up dramatically.

That 5 million is relatively small compared to the money he has earned for them. I do think he should take a paycut to bump the salaries of his assistants.

Another reason to love Bo. His assistants pay is a big issue with him, and I can see the situation unfolding differently if this occurred at Nebraska.

Absolutely.

The thing that is a real kick in the pants is that he is a figure head. The assistants did all the work and mack gets all the glory. As much as I dislike to give credit to anything texas, I have to give it to the assistants here. I think it speaks to their dedication to the program(assuming they don't leave).
