Not about winning

I was feeling bad about the loss last night until I read this comment from Shawn Watson. When asked why Watson stayed with Martinez when the quarterback was clearly struggling, Watson said "We just felt like it was the right thing to do at the time. He's a young quarterback and we wanted to make sure we showed our confidence in him."

So now I get it. The coaching staff wasn't really trying to win the game, they were more interested in giving Martinez an emotional boost, and not hurt his ego. Now I feel so much better. See, I was upset that we didn't win the game, and really I should be happy we made important strides in stroking Martinez' ego. Martinez looked like a junior high quarterback out there last night. His fumble when he was being sacked is a play you expect to see a 7th grader make. Maybe that's why Watson is so concerned about making Martinez feel like he has the coaches' confidence. He wants to get him ready for 8th grade football.

I'm surprised this coaching staff is so eager to have the players feel good about themselves. I guess Ricky Thenarse getting benched for not wrapping up on tackles was the exception, not the rule. I think Ricky should go talk to Bo, and tell him how he feels about not being shown that the staff has confidence in him. Maybe Ricky should have been given a chance to "fight his way through it" like Watson said Martinez should.

I thought football was a meritocracy where you played because you performed, and everybody competes for playing time. In Watson's offense, it must be more about feeling good about yourself, even when you are not performing well. That explains why Watson quit running the wildcat when it was clearly effective. He wanted to make sure that everybody had a chance to play.

Bringing this up reminds me of something...............Bo has said in the past the best players will see the field. That's starting to change IMO. Taylor wasn't the best option and #9 (don't wanna try and spell his name) should've seen the field as a receiver alot sooner than he did. When your RB is better than you QB you've got a serious problem on offense. It's a f-ing joke and OU wasn't scared to go for it on 4th down over and over again given our offense couldn't do ANYTHING!

It's just more geek speak from Watson. It reminds me of Callahan so much. When you ask why we didn't run this package or use that guy instead of Taylor, Watson quotes from Smith on Quarterback Psychology and explains how, according to studies, pulling him would have resulted in a 15% increase in the odds of damaging his long-term psyche.

I don't sense any fire. Any passion. Any drive to win from Watson. Like I said, it's all geek speak about trends and odds and "long-term progress." Baby steps.

#9 Broekemeier from Aurora according to many published stories has been injured all the time. i said the same thing against Colorado. He is a Todd Petersen type. Not athletic according to wr expectations but is always open and catches the damn ball.

Another point i just hope the didnt fry Cody Green for good, he really impressed me against CU and showed a swagger instead of that dear in the headlight look, and after he watched that crap last night, i hope he doesnt fold in altogether.

I agree, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I wanted to see him start instead of T-Mart and I hoped that before the game. At least the kid can throw. Sure he makes mistakes and fumbles the ball at times, but J.C. we couldn't have been much worse on offense with all the fumbles. At least he would've thrown the ball away.
