Five-Star Recruit
I was feeling bad about the loss last night until I read this comment from Shawn Watson. When asked why Watson stayed with Martinez when the quarterback was clearly struggling, Watson said "We just felt like it was the right thing to do at the time. He's a young quarterback and we wanted to make sure we showed our confidence in him."
So now I get it. The coaching staff wasn't really trying to win the game, they were more interested in giving Martinez an emotional boost, and not hurt his ego. Now I feel so much better. See, I was upset that we didn't win the game, and really I should be happy we made important strides in stroking Martinez' ego. Martinez looked like a junior high quarterback out there last night. His fumble when he was being sacked is a play you expect to see a 7th grader make. Maybe that's why Watson is so concerned about making Martinez feel like he has the coaches' confidence. He wants to get him ready for 8th grade football.
I'm surprised this coaching staff is so eager to have the players feel good about themselves. I guess Ricky Thenarse getting benched for not wrapping up on tackles was the exception, not the rule. I think Ricky should go talk to Bo, and tell him how he feels about not being shown that the staff has confidence in him. Maybe Ricky should have been given a chance to "fight his way through it" like Watson said Martinez should.
I thought football was a meritocracy where you played because you performed, and everybody competes for playing time. In Watson's offense, it must be more about feeling good about yourself, even when you are not performing well. That explains why Watson quit running the wildcat when it was clearly effective. He wanted to make sure that everybody had a chance to play.
