Notre Dame's Kelly: "We stink right now"

All-American
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Brian Kelly's frustration at the beginning of Notre Dame's fourth spring workout Wednesday apparently hadn't simmered by the time it ended.

"We stink right now," the Irish coach said after Wednesday's workout. "We're just so far from where we need to be in terms of attention to detail. This was a step back for us today.

"I want to make sure it's clear I liked what I saw defensively, but we gotta do this thing together. And we're not on the same page yet."

Those viewing just the first 45 minutes of the practice could sense this coming. Offensive players slogged upfield and were out-of-place in the opening run-through, so much so that the third-team unit didn't take its scheduled snaps in the first practice period.

Clearly, what irritated Kelly most was the languid pace at the start, and that might have contributed to the long post-practice lecture at the far end of the practice fields.

"You're 18, 19, 20 years old and you're playing at Notre Dame and it's 70 degrees out and I gotta motivate you?" Kelly said. "That's where we're not on the same page yet.

"We gotta get it out of them. They don't understand what I want from them yet. So I've got to go back and re-communicate the message and what the expectations are and how we practice and how we come to work every day."

And he refused to chalk it up to being just four practices into his tenure with the Irish.

"We don't have time," Kelly said. "We have to do it now. It's gotta get done the right way. You get 15 practices (in spring). That's all you get. And then they're going to be gone. We can't touch them until August. I can't wait until August to put this team in a position to win in 2010. It's gotta happen today."

As a closet Irish fan I must say that I hope that he can make a difference there. He wouldn't have been my pick but ND has been down too long IMO.

I know I'm in the minority here.

If I must be force-fed Notre Dame football every stinkin' saturday by NBC, the silver lining has been watching them suck the last few years. This news leaves me hopeful that it will continue.

Can't stand him after what he pulled with the NB/Cincinnati fiasco. What he deserves imo.
I agree. What he did to Cinci wasn't the right thing to do and to strand an undefeated Cinci team against a tough Florida team in a BCS bowl game. When Bo Pelini was hired as Nebraska's head coach position you didn't see him back his bags and ditch his team. I know they were playing in the National Championship game but still Bo stayed because he loves those kids and those kids spent 1-3 years with Bo and grew a good relationship with him and I think that Brian Kelly should've took the same approach.

I hope that Kelly bombs big time at Notre Dame
