NU Copyright license

Does anyone hear hold or has anyone attempted to obtain a copyright license from UNL? Just wondering what the process is like and what your fees looked like. I've read about it a bit so I've got a ballpark figure for fees. Perhaps I should talk to an attorney.

Copyright or trademark? What is it that you want to reproduce? Copyrights are for content like video, music, literature or art. Trademarks are generally logos associated with a product or service. An example of a trademark would be the block N with "Huskers" through it. Like this:

Ah, yes. I always get them turned around. Trademark it is. I want to see if I can turn a hobby into a viable side business. I have a few prototypes but wouldn't dare selling these items without a license. My wife works for the university and tells me how often in her meetings they talk about "protecting the brand." The university would take a 12% royalty so I'd have to make sure it was worth my time. I'll dig this thread up and report back my progress if I decide to go through with it.

Thanks saunders and NUance!

I contacted Lonna regarding a request for one-time personal use of a logo and was denied. It was for one item that would not be for resale. I know for a fact many other schools do it and are very helpful to their fans in the process. She sent me links to merchandise for sale in the bookstore and other outlets that wasn't similar.

Good luck with your venture. 12% doesn't seem too unreasonable.

It's a complete mess.

I’ve been a member of the Tampa Bay Huskers for about 10 years. Last season, we tried to get shirts printed (again) for our local NAA chapter going through a national printer (we sell them to support the chapter and our scholarship fund that we give to the university), and were denied because we had the Nebraska "N" in it. We were told we had to get university approval, so after poking around, I got in touch with Lanna.

I sent her our logo (A pirate flag with the N on it), and asked what we had to do, and it turned into a nightmare. She wanted us to change a whole bunch of stuff to match “university guidelines for branding” that don’t even exist in written form. It literally comes down to her personal judgement.

Specifically, most corporations have a branding guideline of do’s/dont’s and Nebraska doesn’t have one. That’s just crazy. The best part was, after she sent over her corrections, I asked her why not a single one of the NAA chapters linked from he Alumni Association were remotely in compliance, and she basically said “I don’t know.”e
