NU fighting to keep recruits

You know...I brought up all those same points in another thread about rather having a 2-star recruit with lots of desire but lesser talent playing on my team than a 5-star recuit with lots of talent but less desire...and, if I can remember correctly...most of you said I was full of crap.... <_<

I have to agree...and i get a lot of crap myself for that view. You still have to try to get the 5 star, but you don't sell your soul to get him....and he has to show some desire and understanding of what the Huskers are about.

Why does he have to have any understanding of what the Huskers are about? So what as long as he's a talented, hard-working kid? He can learn the Husker tradition as he grows in the program. But I would never rate "love of Nebraska" over talent when evaluating a player.

The point is that the farther you go away from Nebraska, fewer kids are going to understand the tradition of the program. Nebraska just isn't the name nationally that it used to be.

So if you really want to get kids who understand the heritage of Husker football, you are going to have a lot of in-state kids.

My point is to just get talent.

you need to get out more, I travel all over the country, and you would be surprised how many people understand the tradition at Nebraska and have respect for it. There are Husker fans everywhere that have never stepped foot in Nebraska....not many schools can say that.

You might be surprised....when you are as talented as these kids are....they take notice. And there are a lot of Husker fans out there to push them in our direction and inform them of what Nebraska's tradition is like....so, go ahead and laugh...I contend you probably don't get out of state much and talk football to people. :w00t That is one of my favorite benefits of my job...

I don't care of some farmboy from Elkhorn has dreamed of playing for Nebraska since he was a kid, and his daddy was a Husker. If he can only run a 4.8, and some kid from Arizona who weighs 20 lbs more runs a 4.4, I'll take the Arizona kid, thank you very much.

The question isn't what anyone can run -- it's what they will run. If that guy that runs 4.4 doesn't give a crap, and runs a 4.6 on the field because of a bad attitude, and that 4.8 guy from Elkhorn plays his heart out and runs a 4.6 on gameday, I'll take the dude from Elkhorn every day of the week.

Talent is important, and work ethic is more important. The question isn't "What did this guy do in high school", the question is "What will this guy do for us at Nebraska". Past performance can indicate future performance, but there are outside factors. In addition to all that, if the dude that runs a 4.4 doesn't have a team attitude, and is just out to make himself look good, I'll take the 4.8 guy that's dreamed of playing for Nebraska, because you know he'll be willing to do nearly anything that allows him to accomplish that dream.

Why do you assume that the talented guy doesn't give a crap and won't play hard? Because he doesn't understand the Husker tradition as well as others? Really? Only kids who understand Nebraska's history play hard?

This is a faulty argument. Obviously, you want talented kids who play hard. But you've done nothing to prove that the kid who runs a 4.4 has a "bad attitude." And you've also done nothing to prove that the kid from Elkhorn is actually bust his a$$ every single play.

Sure, work ethic and attitude are factors in recruiting a player, but, all other things being equal, you always take the more talented kid.

In your first post you specifically stated that the 4.8 guy dreamed of playing for Nebraska, and just said the other guy was faster, so you'd take him -- you didn't present an "all things being equal" case to me, so that's not what I responded back with. Most people that are given an opportunity to perform directly at a lifelong dream take full advantage of it. You assume that the 4.4 guy and the 4.8 guy have the same dedication, and I'm arguing that given the situation you provided the guy that's lifelong dream is to be a Husker would likely have more drive and then I emphasized that point. I would also argue that Tom Osborne largely agrees with me given his emphasis on the walk on program.

What I think

I think we need to keep some things in mind when we look at this years recruiting class. One this will probably be Pelini's worst class, cause he was hired at the end of the process. Also we may be suffering from the hangover from a 5-7 season. I think that even if this class dosent shape up like we hoped, we still have a bright future ahead of us.

You are not going to see that happen that often....they got lucky. But, it will happen more often now that they have limited the scholarships like they have.

I still think Kansas' defense was mighty suspect, they have some work to do there. :hmmph

I hate to question this, as it makes me look like an a$$ to the people that work so hard to keep this site going... but I think all this moving has actually made things more difficult to navigate. Everything is now fragmented.

The way things are going lately, every time I post I have to ask myself whether I'm in the right section --- and I'm always posting about current Nebraska Football!

With no talk about recruiting or NU's new coaches, virtually everything can be moved to the BS Forum. How that Mikey Bo thread hasn't been moved is beyond me.

I never did...because you are dead on target. NU won a lot of games for 40 years with "2-star" athletes because football is first and foremost a game of attitude and desire. You've got to "want" it more than the other guy.

Very often the "5-star" recruit is the kid who, as Matt Davison said, plays for the name on the back of the jersey rather than the name on the front. You have to recruit the person as well as the player.
