NU Football: Houdini and The Pelini Padlock

Dejon Gomes isn’t the headliner of Nebraska’s secondary. That’s corner Prince Amukamara. He isn’t the guy with the eye-popping vertical. That’s corner Alfonzo Dennard. Nor the guy with the ready-made NFL frame. That’s Peso Eric Hagg.

But Gomes is the Houdini. The pop-up playmaker. The guy who stepped in front of a Blaine Gabbert pass at Missouri for a key interception. Who punched the ball out of KU receiver Kerry Meier’s hands just before the end zone. Who turned a short completion into an immaculate interception in the Big 12 Championship to give Nebraska’s offense a shot at victory.

And he sets a certain tone for the unit. Like any magician, Gomes never appears too surprised by his feats, either, calmly recapping his play in a low, off-handed tone that suggests a guy trying not to get a big head.

“Football is a very competitive game with huge egos,” he said. “You have to look at yourself as the best. But ultimately it’s going to come down to film. You’re going to have to put it on tape. Go out every Saturday prove it.”

There’s a target, Gomes said, on Nebraska’s defense now. Especially the secondary.

In the past five years, only nine teams allowed a lower completion percentage than NU’s 47.8 last year. Three of them were coached by Bo Pelini at LSU. None of them were in the pass-happy Big 12. As good as Oklahoma and Texas’ defensive backfields were and are, neither cracked the 50-percent barrier. linky

Love the way Gomes plays ball. He has a nose for the ball. Wish he was here for four years.

Get ready for a darn good secondary this year.
