NU gets "C+" grade from ESPN on hiring process

on the other hand, what did we get rid of?

cally, D

coz, F-

elmo, F

ok, those grade C guys are looking pretty damn good from here!
That's really not a very good argument IMO.

"Well, a C is better than an F!" Yea, but they are both bad.

I believe that this is correct. We went from a D/D- overall to a C/C+. The head coach might be a B or better --- no one really knows. But the assistants I'd give, at least in terms of proven results, a D. They may end up good. Who knows. But no one on the staff has certifiable demonstrable excellence on their resume.

Anyone that thinks that ESPN intentionally has an agenda or biased view against Nebraska is needs to do the serious re-evaluating. What do they have to gain from it? Just because not everybody sings the school fight song, means that they are against us.

I see nothing wrong with their evaluation. Hiring a guy that has never been a head coach before and bringing back a bunch of former coaches. Nothing stands out that would say that they got straight A's here.

well Dave, a C is a passing grade, an F is a FAILING grade....you know, bad, NFG, loser, etc.

besides as a C grade and never coached a play, there sure is some upside having an A as a DC at LSU.

but then i would expect you and some others to beat up the new staff before they get on the field. <_<
Skipping for a second that this argument is, at best, inconsequential... We're arguing over fake grades from the news source that named Miles as Michigan's next head coach.

My point is this. We got what we got. We went out and hired a guy with no head coaching experience, a few assistants that were hanging out at home last year and a few guys who are getting their first full time assistant jobs. That's it.

I hope they do well but I can understand where ESPN is coming from. When a team like Michigan goes out and get's a head coach that is proven, we and NU hired a guy who is going to cut his teeth as a head coach here. That makes me nervous. We're taking a chance when I think we could have hedged better.

Why would you expect me to beat up the staff before they hit the field? Because others did the same from the previous staff? pfft. Gimme a break. Like I said, I hope he does well but I am not ready to proclaim victory because OMG BO!Q! is back. There's no need to get snippy.

yup, kind of like when Oklahoma hired Bob Stoops......guess that was a C grade hire too.

always room to grow boys.

I can understand giving Pelini a C because he is a first time head coach. Interim doesn't count except that his 1-0 record carries over.

Yet I think they are also basing their C partially on their logic in the final analysis that Nebraska should have been able to land a big name. Who? I want names! ;)

no need to feel bad when you fire the "first shot" and then someone else fires back either. :box

yes it is a stupid argument, but faced with buying out cally and paying out for a new HC, Os obviously put a cap on what he wanted to spend and the type of guy he wanted in here. it might work, it might not. he might turn out like Bob Stoops, he might not. but we know the cally/coz experiment was a failure and yes, we did not want to hire an outsider at a huge fee to come on board here. Os has typical mid western values, when it comes to work ethics and "value in the coaching dollar spent". it was his call and we should support it for at least as long as cally had to right the ship......this was Pelini's dream job......i don't think it was any other coaches dream job.....so outside of money, how much commitment could one expect from an overpaid high profile coach? something to think about......... :o

If you ask me they're just PO'd that they didn't get a controversial 40 day search to talk about, and how NU screwed up firing their old coach and nobody would want this job...like they did last time.

ESPN is a media outlet. They want stuff to talk about and we didn't give it to them.

The whole grade was based on no proven head coach. Big deal. A 'proven' coach isnt a lock to win games, just ask A&M. Or hell, us. Billy C went to the superbowl. It is about the right 'fit', not a big name.

I don't think we should get all worked up about anything ESPN says about Coach Pelini or his assistants.

I'm gonna guess that ESPN didn't give someone like Bob Stoops or even somebody like Jim Tressel coming to Ohio State from a D-1AA school high grades and that has all worked out well.

In my opinion I don't really think the "experts" at ESPN really know anything behind Coach Pelini or his staff.

All this over something ESPN said!!

My wifes opinion over CFB carries more weight than anything said from the ESPN camp.

Yeah, ESPN is just like anyone else...it is all speculation. If they knew who would be the best each year, we wouldn't need to play out the season would we? Sometimes they can look pretty silly...I don't give them much credence.

I think the grade was a little low but I can see their point.

I would've leaned towards hiring a proven winner at HC as-well. Like they said we are Nebraska. If we were a Washington State Bo's hiring would have gotten a better grade.

I like Bo and think he can do nice things for us. I think we will win with him but you haven't done it til you've done it. They think we should've hired a guy that has done it. I can understand that.
