Thenarse vs. Jones:
Junior cornerback Andre Jones hasn’t been wearing a Blackshirt in recent Nebraska football practices.
Whether that’s a permanent demotion of some sort or a ploy for motivation isn’t certain. Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said Saturday he wouldn’t address the situation.
Cosgrove did, however, note the improvement that freshman defensive back Rickey Thenarse has been making.
Thenarse is working exclusively at cornerback as the Huskers prepare for the Cotton Bowl.
I-Backs:
Nebraska’s “I-back committee” continues to deal with injuries, as Kenny Wilson didn’t practice Saturday. He has battled knee tendinitis this season. “He’s been sore and has some inflammation,” said NU offensive coordinator Jay Norvell. “We’re just trying to let that get settled down. Hopefully we’ll get him back shortly.”
Practice:
Nebraska had a “high-energy” practice Saturday at Hawks Championship Center, Norvell said. The first semester ended Friday, perhaps energizing the players. “The kids are all into (practice),” Norvell said. “I think now that finals are over they can just concentrate on football, and we’re getting excited to play.”
Ganz:
With starting quarterback Zac Taylor taking part in graduation ceremonies Saturday, sophomore Joe Ganz took all of the snaps with the first-string offense “and did a phenomenal job,” said Norvell, noting that sophomore Beau Davis also received plenty of action. “We had a blitz drill — a highly competitive drill. So it was really good work for those guys.”
